Tips on anacharis care?

I've had bad experiences with anacharis in the past. It always seems to rot away to a bare stem. But then again, this was in very poor lighting conditions.

This time I've got about 1.3 watts per gallon, and I'm dosing with Excel. When I got my bunches of anacharis home, I untied the metal weights and re-wrapped them very loosely, tight enough to hold the bunch together but not so tight that the stems are squashed. Then I stuck them in the gravel, or anchored them against the side of the tank with rocks.

I know that anacharis is supposed to be an easy beginner plant, but I'm wondering, is there some other trick to keeping it alive that I'm missing? I like the way my new bunches look, and I don't want them to rot away like my past anacharis have done.

Thanks!

I'd imagine your previous lighting must have been really low if you couldn't keep Anacharis alive.. but 1.3wpg is well enough for them, so perhaps you'll have no trouble this time around.

I would skip the Excel, unless you have other plants that need it, since Anacharis is one of the plants that Excel can kill off.

Well, darn it. And I was just feeling proud of myself for keeping up with my excel dosing. :)

I hope the excel that's in the water now will be ok--I don't feel like getting up and doing a water change to get any of it out.... I'll skip a few days, and then maybe just dose twice a week. I do like the way my other plants are responding to it, so I don't want to cut it out altogether.

have you considered florin axis?

nitrite produced from waist seems to help mine grow with a couple hours (4-8)of sun light

This is part of my concern for all the plants in this tank--it's a 55 housing 1 betta :)

For various reasons I had to rehome all my other fish about 2 weeks ago, and I only kept my bettas. I haven't tested my water recently, but I'm guessing the nitrate in the 55 is going to get very low.

Yeah, Florin Axis is safe- it doesn't have the same active ingredient as Excel. It works completely differently and won't kill your vals/anacharis. (much cheaper too-although you'll likely need to order it online as few stores sell it).

As for Excel in the water- I think Excel has a half-life of 24 hours- so it will quickly work it's way out of your tank.
