To shoot or not to shoot

Syddakyd since when are any questions stupid. You didnt have to make a comment. No stupid questions. I would go with the fishing line. I know in MN it is a huge fine and jail time for even shooting at heron.

I have heard of people using plastic owls to scare away other birds. Some people use them around when they plant new grass to keep other birds from eating the seeds. Apparently smaller, and some larger birds are scared of owls.
If that doesn't work,,shoot them.

For all of you who have not had all their pond koi eaten by a heron fishing line doesn't work. This bird is a flying rat and just as smart you need to get plastic chicken wire fence at home depot it’s green and will work but takes away from your ponds look. Plastic owls work the best.

These birds cannot be just chased away they return again and again until they get that free dinner on you.

Check your local laws about whether they are protected or not. If not shoot him don't kill him or give up on outside fish or just stock feeder gold fish.

These birds will eventually *******off they clean you out and will keep coming back even if the pond is empty. They do not give up!
I have changed from fish to plants in my pond because of one of these birds
Good Luck you are going to need it.

I had forgotten about the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. It is illegal to:

""pursue, hunt, take, capture, kill, attempt to take, capture or kill, possess, offer for sale, sell, offer to purchase, purchase, deliver for shipment, ship, cause to be shipped, deliver for transportation, transport, cause to be transported, carry, or cause to be carried by any means whatever, receive for shipment, transportation or carriage, or export, at any time, or in any manner, any migratory bird, included in the terms of this Convention"

Honeslty, why risk it?

Fishing line works. They can't walk around and keep getting caught up in it. I can't guarantee that it will always work, but it does.

And no one has the right to build a pond, put brightly colored, slow fish in it and then get mad at the heron when it does what comes naturally. Thousands of dollars in koi or not you put them there and the bird is doing what comes natural.

exactly.

fishing line may not work and may not be as humane as many may think. many fishing lines will degrade in sunlight but it may not degrade quickly. some will not degrade at all.
it is possible for fishing line to act as a noose in a tangle too. or may accidentally be ingested. I have seen cases where herons here locally had fishing line wrapped around their beaks.
it can be effective but due care is required.
you can also find 'blanks'.(commonly used by hatcheries to scare off predators.) motion sensors can be rigged to set off loud noise.
also ..in terms of some regulations..regarding protection.. there may also be regulations to protect your livestock. there are regs that may allow you to rid yourself of a pest animal otherwise protect if they are in the act of depredation.
in essence they can make allowances to allow you to protect your property.

it is an interesting predicament. but I personally would not suggest using aa peelt gun as a remedy for a bird the size of a heron.

yeah we have a huge problem over here with outside ponds being viewed as heron feederies by members of the heron community.

couple of people I know went for a motion detector rigged to a noisemaker - worked nicely; they get one showing up occasionally now but it tends to bug out after a couple of weeks trying, then peace and quiet for a good while until a new one comes along.

lol have somebody else shoot it ... then feed it to the fishies.
