I think he does. I tried w/o a airstone and you get big fast bubbles.
But on my question? Would it be better to do your setup on a HOB since it isnt a sealed system? Or better to let it diffuse in the quiet corner?
I use an airstone to get help initiate diffusion immediately. Without an airstone, larger bubbles came out, and didn't get chopped up as much. The airstone makes the bubbles small, so by the time they go through the filter and come out of my output, they are extremely small if there at all.
With an HOB, you lose a lot of co2 as the water pours out of the HOB. Therefore, if you put your co2 line into the intake of your HOB, a lot(if not most) of your co2 is going to diffuse into the air before it ever reaches your tank. When I was using an HOB, I used the Hagen Ladder. Personally, I'd keep the co2 as far away from the HOB as possible. Make sure there is good movement of the water so the co2 gets moved around, but minimize it's surface contact, that's the key.
I had the ladder on the opposite side of the tank from my drop checker, that way I had a pretty good idea of the co2 levels in the tank, not just close to the co2 source.
Again, just my opinions. I'm no expert.
