A couple of weeks ago a co worker mentioned that she wanted to get rid of her 55 gallon tank. I have wanted one forever. She said I could have it if I took the fish with it. I asked what kind. She told me an angel, some little minnow type things,a gold fish and a few little sucker fish. I figured she meant a gold colored barb or something and maybe ottos or corys.

Well, I get there and look at the tanks. It had 5 or 6 giant danios, a huge shark of some sort, a huge angel fish, a huge gold fish, and 3 gigantic plecos. I was tempted to say nevermind, but I felt bad for them. She said she only feeds them goldfish food (poor plecos) and that her fish die all the time because they have short life spans.

So now I am stuck with all of these fish. i don't know what to do with them. I want to get them into suitable tanks. I was thinking of trying to find somebody with a pond to take the gold fish, but now it is uded to living in warm water. Do you think it would adjust?

Congrats on rescuing the fishies! I think the goldie would be better off in a suitable home. I believe it would make the adjustment just fine as long as it was properly acclimated.

ps... pics please!

You did this with the best intentions and she decided to be ignorant, too bad people don't respond well to telling them they're terrible human beings...

I agree the ones that need to be re-homed can be put on craigslist.

I honestly think putting fish on Craigslist is a bad idea unless you screen their prospective housing properly. SO many people out there would think "OH a free fish! I can buy a cheap bowl and have a new pet!"
Depending on how poor their health is, fishstores might turn them away. Same if they're just too big (many LFS won't take large plecos because they're so hard to find proper homes for). Do a google search and join as many fish forums as possible and try to rehome them that way. I'm sure if you joined MFK and put an ad there, some of the larger fish could get into a proper home. I know quite a few people on this board in the coldwater section who would be happy to help rehome the goldie.
By taking this tank and taking in these fish, you've brought it upon yourself to be responsible for the continued well being of these fish. Admirable, absolutely. Time consuming, most definitely. But also very rewarding in the end.

The big angelfish if its nice looking shouldnt be a problem to rehome. Neither should the goldfish or danios. The plecos and "shark" fish may be more difficult. Especially depending on what the shark fish is. MFK may have some people willing to take them on, or you can try an LFS and see if they are willing. Well done for being responsible and kind enough to rehome these fish. Im sure you will have your dream tank soon :)

Yeah, I was afraid of just posting a free fish ad. I think I will post on craigslist but ask about their tank and then deliver. I think I'll keep the angel fish. I found out the shark is a bala, so I won't be keeping it.

I live out in the boonies, no fish stores. The semi local petco does take fish to "adopt" out, but I don't trust them to screen homes.

You have two options, Take them to the store for credit or try Rehoming them by posting an ad on craigslist ; Good Luck!

Good Luck and i hope the fish make it. Also i would love some pics.
