So I just moved my red tailed black shark.

He has been in the same 30 Gallon tank for the whole time I've had him. About 3 1/2 to 4 years. He is roughly 3 1/2'' to 4''.

It's going to be a temporary housing, 15 gallon tank. I put about 3/4th's of the water in the new tank from the old tank. Had it sit for about 24 hours. Got the temperature to about 78 deg, which I kept the old tank at.

Anyway, moved him over, and he's freaking out. Is this normal?

By freak out I mean he is kinda swimming around sporatically and and moving his mouth really fast like he's trying to breath or something?

Should I be worried?

I gave him a few places to hide, and now he is hiding in one of those places and seems to have calmed down a bit. I would hate to lose him.

Any advice would help. Thanks.

What are your water parameters?

forgive my ignorance. I don't have a ph kit or anything on hand to test it, if that is what your referring to.

But I used the majority of water from the old tank which was just refreshed on sat.

The rest I added just tap water, but used de-chlorinator like I always do. So I'm assuming water should be fine.

Tank water will not have bacteria, they need solid surfaces. Transfer the filter over otherwise your RTS is sitting in an uncycled tank...

The whole filter??? or just the sponge thing? The sponge thing on my new tank is smaller than on the other tank, so I couldn't do that.

I agree with jpappy completely. Also, you really should get a water test kit to find out if there's ammonia and nitrite present - both will make your little guy quite sick.

At least transfer a cutting of the media. You need to seed the tank.

so basically first thing I should do is go buy a test kit, to see if water is ok?

question...

Can I just take the whole filter from my other tank and put on new tank? And for how long do I have it on new tank and leave the old tank with no filter?

You can take the old sponge out and even just put it in the aquarium - you don't need to put it in the new filter if it really won't fit. This wold get bacteria into your new tank. You could also just move your whole filter over to the new tank. Are there still fish in your old tank?

what is the "media" ? The filter cartridge? Do I just cut some off and place it into the tank?
