The man at the hatchery told me yes he has 5" fish for sale at a dollar each.

I live maybe 30-45 minutes from the hatchery so I would drive and pick them up myself.

He said in my 150 gallon recirculating stock tank I could try to grow 4-5 rainbow trout to 2 pound size.

He said any more than 5 would not be good and doomed to failure but 5 or less and I could probably do it.

Any thoughts?

Even the most experienced aquarists have trouble keeping trout alive, they require a chiller and ALOT of space. A 150 gallon isn't going to be enough, why don't you just settle on something that you can keep?

good luck

if all else fails; trout tastes really great when cooked with lemon and orange slices on the grill!

haha thats horrible, true, but horrible. I think its really awesome what you are doing by the way with the trout. never heard of it except in ponds and even then never heard MUCH about it. Its not your average hobby fish, but thats what makes it cool.. Personally, I would try one at first. and see how that goes..up to you though, your project. Keep us update, maybe some pictures too :D

I have to agree with cdawson on this one, trout require pristine conditions and there's only one that I know of that might not outgrow your tank, but probably would be the hardest to keep.

Ultimately, the choice is yours.

When the trout hit 9-10" they're going to be eaten.

He said if I had an unrecirculating system in my 150 gallon tank I could keep up to 80 trout

But he said 4 trout should be fine to reach 12" and pan size.

Yes I know how clean the water has to be.

I have plenty of cold oxygenated water in the tank so my only obstacle is super efficient filitration.

The water temp is 59 degrees F currently.

LOL ..."Pan size"! That's great. Now I'm thinking about lunch.

Don't forget to throw some bread crumbs on 'em in the pan! ;)

That orange sauce sounds awesome!!

Trout also tastes super good baked/BBQ'd on a cedar plank, with lemon, dill and shallots... *drool*
