Okay , this is weird but I just noticed my betta twitches when he swims. I was watching him and he was swimming leisurely back and forth but would twitch his head , (as if he was looking at me saying, "What?" ) He's perfectly healthy but do bettas do this or does he have some kind of twitchy condition? He just jerks his head ... Can anyone help with this, please?
:help:

Does he have any scratches on his fins? Any tiny white spots? OMG THE SKY IS FALLING GO OUT AND BUY ICH MEDS BEFORE HE DIES

bunlet that was not needed...

So about the betta, is the twitching up and down? side to side? something else? I have noticed that some bettas tend to have a twitch up and down every now and then so it may be perfectly normal.

What size tank is your betta in? Do you have any filtration for the tank? Is it a male or female? I once babysat a betta for a friend over spring break. She kept him in a very small container without any filtration (despite my objections). He used to twitch and have little spasms or even charge the side of the little tank. I personally though that this had to do with poor water quality and lack of space combined with the fact that he is a male and somewhat aggressive already. I don't know much about bettas, but if you have him in a tiny tank with poor water quality, it wouldn't surprise me if he started freaking out a little from the stress after a while.

Leo has just been adopted 1.5 weeks ago, I found him on the back of the shelf at one of my LFS. He was living in less than an inch of water in a 6 oz. drink glass. He just looked at me and that was it, I had to save him. He now resides in a 4.5 gal. by himself with some java moss and a piece of java fern narrow, and a cave that he was scared of at first but now uses.
His water temp is 78, I do a PWC every 2 days of 25% or more, fom the bottom with a gravel vac. My substrate is PFS, I don't disturb it much.

Sometimes he just hangs there in the water in the same shape he had to be in when he lived in a glass. I thought he was dead at least twice, it's like he doesn't know he has more room now but he does swim around the whole tank. And, he twitches! It's not a contortionist type twitch but is definitely noticeable and uncomfortable looking. Does anyone know why he's doing this and can I help him at all?

I haven't checked his water params much since I do alot of PWC's, it's a side to side twitch.

Despite bunlet giving me a heart attack with that message LOL, Leo did in fact have 2 whites salt like flecks that I noticed 3 days after I got him. I treated the water with salt and put his temp. to 80 ( I was going higher on the heat but they dissappeared at 80 degrees) , they are gone now and have been since the second day his heat was up.

I had a filter in until yesterday because I read that air from it will not be good for his plants. I have to buy one that doesn't give air bubbles at the same time.

Whaqts more important, your fishes health or your plants health? Put the filter back on until you get a better filter that doesn't use air bubbles.

I run bubble wands in my planted 55 gallon all the time now. The plants are fine and I know that the fish are getting enough aeration to stay healthy and happy. Dorkfish is absolutely right. The fish should always come first.
Take care,
Mary.

i am having the same issue as you with my betta, he twitches like crazy. Treated the water with 3 teaspoons of salt (3 gallon) and elevated temp. Hopefully it works

This is all getting confusing here, I'm finding a lot of sites that say it isn't needed to put a filter in, I only put one in the first place because I was going to cycle the tank but since it sits in the center of my D. room table I decided to go with more frequent water changes, the filter wasn't really making enough bubbles to disturb the plants either it was just because I read they don't need it anyway. Now you tell me I should put it back in! Of course the fish is more important or I wouldn't be here asking if he was ok.
:thud:

Are you not sure about the filter re: the betta or the plants? Bettas, while they have adapted to be able to breath air from the surface, do best with airation, like any fish. If you didnt have a filter but say, some bubblers, you might be able to get away with no filter, but Id just as soon keep it filtered. I havent heard about a filter being bad for plants, but I supposed Im still fairly new at this. My planted tanks are filtered, one with a whisper internal and one with a pennflex HOB, plants are fine.
