I wish I could fit in my tank

Hey all, got a question.

At current, I have no tanks. I am moving in a few weeks & where we are moving will only allow 2 20g tanks. What chance might have at using a single canister filter to filter both buy using 2 " Y " pieces? If it's ok to do that, what would you recommend?

I was looking at the XP3 FilStar the Fluval 305 and the Marineland Multistage C-360. Would either of these do the job?

I would not use 2 Y-splitters, because of the physics involved, a) getting the flowrate to match from both tanks, b) clog one hose and there is no ouput, only input...

Still quite possible. Just set up an overflow and sump to pull the water from. Then you only have to worry about regulating the water running back into the tanks, and the overflow will take care of the outgoing water.

Search the forum for information on overflow systems. You might have more results in the saltwater/marine section.

The only problem I see with an overflow & sump would be the Landlord lookin at is as another tank and I'm only allowed 2 20g's.

I agree that getting a single canister to run to tanks is not the greatest idea. In theory you could drill hoes in the sides of the tanks and plump them together, but then the fish would swim between them or you would have some material blocking the path and reducing flow rate.

Water Bridge...it'll work as long as the top of both tanks are level. Plumb it so the intake for the filter is at the end of one tank, and the output is on the other.

or, you could DIY yourself two canister filters, I've had excellent results out of mine, and about the same price for a decent HOB.

link if interested.

I have not tried, but you just might be able to use a Y splitter, although I wouldn't suggest it.

OK, scratching the idea.
One of these tanks will be densely planted to mimic the natural Lemon Tetra habitat (6 or 7). So if I use a HOB filter, what is an acceptable filter to be looking at?
Still trying figure out what other species to put in there.

scratching what? the two tanks or the Y. Id do 2 Aqua clear HOB and be done. the size seems ok to me for the tetras. I like the idea of getting the landlord into fish and get him/her a 1g 10.00 at walmart. start it up for them to not discourage if they have a accident starting up a tank. and away you go. maybe you can have a huge tank if he/she get to share a drink once and awhile in front of it lol. just maybe right?

Scratching the Y.

Yea.....I wish, "there will be no further discussion on the fish....I meant what I said", this is what he told me when I tried begging.
