ugh, i think its ich.

Follow the 2 tsp per gallon - it's the same kind of salt, just sold under a different brand name. :thm:

how exactly did you come up with the 13 3/4 teaspoons every 4 hours? im trying to figure out what the ratio should be for us to treat the 29 gallon. we just did a water change and now just added the first installment of salt. each time we add the salt we do 13 3/4 teaspoon until we reach the total of 110 teaspoons, right? or do we increase it? i got a bit confused when i reread what you had said. thanks!

becuause i did the math, and if i put 13.75 teaspoons in every 4 hours, 13.75 times 8 equals 110 which is two teaspoons per gallon....so then the 29 gallon would be 58 teaspoons, and 7.25 teaspoons every 4 h ours, right?

it doesn't have to be exact. You're overthinking this! That's OK, because you're being conscientious :)

It's just difficult on fish if you add it all at once. I'd just start with enough salt to make it about half a teaspoon per gallon. Repeat this dose four times to bring it up to 2 tsp per gallon. That's how I did it, worked like a charm, no fishies freaking out :)

It's OK if you end up a little under 2 tsp/gal or a little over. That's why it's a ballpark. As long as it ends up being over than 1 tsp/gal it should be enough to kill the ich.

That math is right. :)

Paula is also right, there is wiggle room up to 3 tsp per gallon, so don't freak out if you've added a little bit more. Just aim for 2 tsp per gallon and you'll be at an okay level.

alright ive already done 4 treatments since 9:30 last night, and after i did the treatment today at 9:30am, i sat there and watched the fish in the bigger tank to make sure they were alright, and it seemed like my zebra danios and my bloodfin tetras were chasing each other around (and doing displays of dominance i believe?) more than usual....is this normal? i just want to make sure they arent getting too stressed or freaked out....im following the treatment schedule with the salt as advised.

danios and tetras can get aggressive if their school size is too small. I've heard 6-7 is the minimum to dilute aggressive tendencies. Chasing in zebra danios is pretty much standard, though.

As for why it's happening now, it could just be a temporary reaction to the change in water chemistry. If it gets problematic, like some fish are getting tired or stressed (pale colors, hiding) let us know. I'm hoping it dies down in a day or so after they get used to it.

Squatty,

I used the salt method given on this forum several weeks ago with huge success. My fishies are happy and the tank has now cycled with no meds.
