the only water conditioner you need to add is one to remove chlorine, stuff to "stimulate slime coat, etc" is really not necessary. The test strips are ok, but are notorious for giving unclear readings. If you think you have any reading of amonia or nitrite, do a water change, wait 30 minutes or so and test again. If you can/want to get something different, liquid test kits give pretty accurate readings
