Umm, what is growing on my plants

The only thing I can think of is some sort of bacterial bloom or a protien scum which are often white or whiteish. These are caused by an excess of nutrients in the water. I would recommend cleaning out as much as you can and then peform a large 50% water change twice a week for a couple of weeks to lessen the concentration of whatever unknown nutrient might be feeding it. It wasn't there before so we presume it's not in your tap water.

Couldn't that just be bacteria that's dead?

I've seen that stuff on a friends tank whos kid threw a sponge in the aquarium (lol! No cases of death but she was one irate mother)

As I mentioned earlier, I have the same problem--clear/whitish hair-like strands that gather into a kind of cobweb on my plants, particularly at the top where they get the most lighting.

How long do you leave your lights on for? 10-12 hours a day is recommended, any more and algae problems can develop.

Also, check that your nitrates stay below 20ppm. Too many nutrients in the water, &/or too much light is usually the cause of algae.

It is definitely much more prevalent near the top of the tank. I don't see anything at all near the bottom of the tank and the 29 gallon tank is crawling w/snails who probably eat it up in a heartbeat. I probably leave my lights on far too long. I've got them on from about 6 am when I leave for work 'til about 9 pm just before I go to bed.

I just noticed something growing on my plants today and I'm not sure what it is. It's not on any of the plants in my 29 gallon, but is all over the plants in my 55 (both real and fake). If I didn't know better, I'd think it was a spiderweb or cobweb of some sort. I've got hornwort and it circles the entire plant. Also, my gourami was picking at it too. I'm guessing it's an algae of some kind?

DId you ever get rid of this or find out what it was, I have a 30 gal cube, that I am kickstarting and this stuff is growing crazy in it?
