Hello all

My poor shubinkin is looking decidedly unwell. Its Dorsal is floppy, its struggling to swim - looks like it has lost its balance? And he/she is at the top of the tank for 90% of the time. I am very worried about her - the other fish looks fine and there are no outward signs of disease.

Any help would be very welcome please as soon as possible. Oh and the water tests are all normal. (they have been in the tank for 3 months or so)

waiting with bated breath......

Kaye
(thanks)

What is "normal"? Exact numbers are much more useful for giving you proper info..Did you cycle your tank? Temp? What are you feeding? Goldfish in general are more prone to swim bladder issues, could be that..Also could be suffering the effects of ammonia poisoning...Tough call..If you could gather a little more info, your chances of getting the right advice will improve greatly.
Hope it turns out for you :)

OK thanks

I have 2 goldfish in the tank. The tank is 50litres. I cycled the tank well before adding the fish (who had been in a "goldfish bowl" before then) using help I got from this forum.

i have just been and tested the water again.

0 NO3
5 NO2
16d GH
6d KH
8 pH

so the N02 is higher than it should be - the rest are the same as always.

the fish looks the same as always - he just appears unable to swim properly. He looks like he has "lost his balance" and his dorsal fin is "floppy"

He has no marks, spots, swellings or anything else visable on him. I did a 50% water change two weeks ago.

is this enough information for someone to help? Many thanks

How big are the goldfish in the tank, sounds like it is a little overstaocked... Now back to the subject, due a 50 percent water change, check fish a few hours after to see if it has improved. If not it is verypossible you are looking at the first signs of a bacterial infection, or a swim bladder disorder. You could try a salt bath for this, however i am thinking that it is the water quality that is affecting your fish.

Not sure how big 50 litres is...Is it somewhere around 12 gals?
Do an ammonia test...That may be the culprit...Your nitrite numbers are high, nitrates low...This suggests that you have too much ammonia, too much nitrites and not enough nitrates. Looks like you may have a mini cycle taking effect...Frequent water changes are necessary... Start today with atleast 70 percent to get the nitrites down...If it is 12 gals, it is way to small for big waste producers like goldfish...this will be a constant problem for you if you keep them in that tank.

I have 2 fish and they are 9cm long. How do I improve the amonia quickly? Just by doing the water change?

Its a 15 Gallon tank. It has 2 fish about 9cm long. not sure how to deal with a mini cycle change? if I do a 70% water change today - what do I do after that??

thanks for your help

Yea, theonly thing you can do to reduce the ammonia is to do a 50-75 oercent water change, I would recommend doing this daily. Do you have an ammonia test kit? If not you should get one, theyare very helpful t see if that is really what your problem is. And to elt youknow how long you need to continue these daily water changes.

Thanks - Its 2am in the morning here - do you think my fish will be ok till the morning proper or should I do a water cahnge right away? Also should I use a water treatment? I normally leave the water for 24 hours before using it but I really hoping to save my fish

think you need more water circulation like a spraybar on the outflow of your filter across & downish the surface of your tank
