I keep hearing people talk about finding great deals on used tanks and setups at Craigslist.com. The ads are local and you go pick it up.

I've gotten my new tank kits at Petco and Petsmart. The equipment that comes with them is not great, though, so I usually end up buying all new stuff as I can afford them and keep the original stuff as backups.

Tanks that have held mice, rats, etc aren't good to use, becuase they chew the silicone sealant. You might be able to razor blade it all off and re-seal it.

adding my 2 cents.

i have bought 2 canister filters off craigslist. and
while both the motors worked and all the pieces seemed to be there, once i tried to set them up i realized that a lot of *little* parts were missing.

and while fixing them has taught me plenty about the workings of canister filters, i would probably never ever buy another filter off of craigslist (or ebay for that matter) i still got a good deal though :)

My newest tank (30gal) i picked up used including stand, hood, lights, heater and filter for $90. Was in very good shape even though it was a few years old, and after cleaning stuff up a little with vineger & baking soda, you could hardly tell it was used :)

craigslist.com..works for me..almost all my tanks came from there.

copper is used in meds like coppersafe..it's chelated but it is still copper.(treats ich)

I have a 75 acrylic full set up with oak stand and canopy with wet dry and vho lights $400

I also picked up a 55 fully set up for $150

I recently found (2) 30's with stand, lights, filters, heater etc $25 one tank was new. they thought the filters went bad I took them anyway..turns out they just needed cleaning as the impellars were blocked. one is a marine land 125 the other a 350.

I did toss the gravel as I didn't care for white blue and black gravel..LOL

I also picked up a 20 with filters and heaters $20 this one will leak if you fill it all the way to the rim..but at normal fills it's fine(1/2" from top) garage sales and yard sales are a great way to get parts (heater, filters, driftwood etc)

Well I got really lucky and just purchased a 125g for $285 but heres the kicker, it came with 6 boxes of equipment, ranging from skimmers, fish transport bowls, python that connects to your sink, every type of med you can imagine for fish, decor including from what I averaged to be over $900 in driftwood, bucket full of new sand, theres 6 filters and tons of spare parts. This entire setup could've easily costed this doctor more than $2500. It came from craigslist. You gotta love that site.

Also beware about the people who sell stuff more that is not a bargain..I seen that happen a lot..Like you can buy a brand new 55 gallon with stand and light and everything for the tank at Wal-Mart for about $235.00..

Wow, thanks so much for everybody's responses! I'm definitely getting my next tank and stand (providing it's well-constructed) used. I asked my boyfriend if I could get a used 55 gal for little money, but he said no! He's right, we live in student housing right now and move quite often. As it is, I'm pushing the 100 gal (in several small tanks) limit as per our lease!

Sigh. So many fish, so little time/space/money.

i bought my 110 gallon tank with everything included of course the stand needed a little refinishing but it was a great deal and totally worth it.
