Very new guy with new tank!

I figured the more LR the better but some say that it will cause a cycle all the time. Is this true?

Wet/drys, like bio-wheels and other mechanisms have no real benefit because the amount of ammo/nitrite reducing bacteria is based on your bio-load, not a contraption mounted outside your tank. If you have substrate in your tank, and some LR and current flow, then you have more than sufficient places for your biological filter to grow. We also have the weird logic of *why in the world* you'd want to move the most critical part of tank ecology *outside* the tank where it depends on AC power to survive. That to me, has never made sense.

Wet/drys and bio-wheels also don't produce any more nitrate than a pure berlin style tank. Again, garbage in = garbage out. The difference though is wet/dry's and bio-wheels have ziltch chance of reducing nitrate to nirtrogen while big pieces of LR and deep substrate beds will reduce *some* pesky nitrate.

I also have had good luck with Remora / Aqua C skimmers. However, I woulnd't use them on a really big tank because they tend not to move much water, and the more expensive needle wheel skimmers are more efficient.

Cabinet is installed

The cabinet is now installed. I finish it this morning. Now we are just waiting for the pump and the heaters.

Wow it looks so clean.. ;) Very nice.

Looking better and better with each update!

2 thoughts.. I still suggest putting a liner or something on the bottom of your stand to protect from water. I debated doing it when I was staining my stand, and was pretty much to impatient to wait any longer when I put it all together so I didn't do it.. and have regretted it ever since. Just one of those many "doh" moments of mine.

Other thing would to somehow make a cover over the top of that power outlet in case your tank somehow overflows. Just a little plastic or wood top/shield thing so if water were to run over the back it wont go into the outlet. Another lesson I learned the hard way unfortunately.

Just trying to share my experience so others can avoid some of the mistakes I made. ;)

As far as the outlet goes it really should be a GFI circut. The protection isn't a bad idea but anywhere there is water near buy should have a GFI.

OK as for the liner. I painted the inside with exterior paint 3 coats it's a high grade sealer and paint. It's made to take water I think it will be fine. If notI will Polly it later.

I will figure something out about covering the outlet but I did tip the tank just a little bit to the front so if it dose overflow it will come out the front. That way we will see it easier and have a chance to stop it.

Sounds like you have thought about everything. :headbang2:

I had to learn the hard way when I first added my sump. I didn't quite understand the overflow box/syphon thing yet. I turned on my return pump and watched my tank get higher and higher and then overflow. Some nice sparks came from the outlet behind the tank and has a nice burn mark. Needless to say I don't use that outlet anymore, and don't have my tank anywhere near an outlet.

Your tank is less likely with a built in overflow, but still, it the very odd, million to one chance (that seems to always happen at some point), the overflow tube gets clogged, tank fills, and spills. Since you leaned it a little forward you have that problem at least noticable and savable. Still, since your waiting for your pump and heaters you can just cut a few little pieces of wood and make a little housing around that outlet. Once less thing to ever have to worry about.

Ideally you would install a GFI outlet, you can never be too safe. I admit though, my tank isn't on one.
