Victorian cichlids

from the looks of all the different species, just how many victoria tanks do you have? they are amazing looking. you need to get some footage on the internet cuz id love to see them in action.

I have 2 groups of Vic's just about ready to breed now, ruby greens and P. nyererei. The nyererei group looks to be male-heavy, seems like another one colors up every few days.

How many tanks? LOL you may not want to know the answer to that. I have some fry in growouts, so I don't know if you would count those. I have one tank that has 2 species of Victorians in it...Xystichromis sp. "Kyoga Flamebacks" and Paralabidochromis chromogynos.

So the best answer I can give is...I have 40 tanks up and running. 16 of those are 10 gallon fry tanks. One is a 10 gallon shell dweller tank. The rest are 20 gallon and above.

My species list and tank:
Neochromis Omnicaeruleus (75 gallon and 20 L)
Mbipia cf. Lutea (55 gallon)
Ptyochromis salmon (55 gallon)
Xystichromis sp. "Kyoga Flameback (55 gallon shared with Paralabidochromis chromogynos)
Paralabidochromis sp. "Fire" (55 gallon)
Haplochromis sp. "Kenya Gold" (50 gallon)
Astatotilapia aeneocolor (29 gallon)
Yssichromis sp. "Blue tipped" (27 flat back hex)
Platytaeniodus sp. "red tail sheller" (35 gallon corner tank)
Xystichromis phytophagus (29 gallon grow out, 10 gallon grow out)

I did water changes today, so I'm hoping the fish will settle down to get some new pictures tonight.

Hi, LadyBarbara!
Did you check the thread of Temptress? Your help is needed there in relation with Christmas Fulus. By the way, how expensive are these stunning beauties?

I've been talking with Temptress...thanks. I'm trying to help with that.

For Xystichromis phytophagus? Xmas Fulus? It depends on who you get them from, but I've seen a pretty good line going for $10 a fish. I'd be careful on who I bought them from, Victorians hybridize fairly easily, and people don't always have pure strains. I buy all my Victorians from
Dave's Rare Aquarium Fish-Price List, or I get them through Hill Country Cichlid Club.

Thanks for the info, LadyBarbara! For such a beauty, it isn't an expensive fish. Why? Isn't X. phytophagus an endangered species in the wild or does it breed fairly easy; or both things are true?

where is the hill country cichlid club at? i might be interested in joining since im not to far away.

and does it take you a while to clean all those tanks? i guess you have most of them in a fish room

It does breed fairly easily. I'm not really sure why it isn't more expensive. I know that this area has a lot of them, but I live in an area that is big on Victorians. Seems like a lot of the HCCC members have Fulus. I know I have a bunch, and I plan to donate most of my fry to one of our charities, the Lake Victoria Project (LVP). We are working with a school in Kenya, that is teaching kids about the fish in their back yard.

The HCCC is the I-35 corridor. We have members from San Antonio and Austin.

And for cleaning the tanks, yes, it takes a while, but I like keeping my fish, so it's not that big of a deal. I have tanks spread all over the house, but my husband will be converting the garage to a fish room for me this summer.

I'm starting research on cichlids from Madagascar. I find them fascinating, and I really don't know very much about them. I won't give up my Vics, that's for sure, but I may add a few large tanks for some species other than rift lake. I posted a picture of my new pair on the Madagascar forum, and I'm just intrigued with them.

ill have to go to one of the meets sometime. they sound like fun. and thats really cool. i want a fish room. im gonna have to get me one some day.
