Victorian cichlids

I think these fish are just beautiful! Until now I didn't even know they existed. I have a 75 gallon tank that I would love to turn into a rift tank, i might have to look into some of these guys! Thanks for doing your part in keeping these species alive!

Mike, I love these species. I love the feeling of producing viable fry to distribute. The coloration of a breeding male Victorian is second to none. I'm so lucky to be able to access some of these species that aren't available to the general public, but if I have any effect on this, I'll at least make some breeding groups available to other breeders. I'll be passing on about 100 Xystichromis phytophagus fry to other clubs in the spring. The money that is paid for these fry will go into various charities that support endangered species.

How much better does it get as a hobbyist, to not only have beautiful fish, but to be able to make a difference? For me, that is the end result. Being able to make a small difference, somehow.

Enjoying our fish is the important part. I happen to be able to acquire some species that aren't common. I do keep Gouramis, tetras, Yellow labs, Red Empress, etc. I enjoy those fish, and maintain those tanks as well as I do the endangered stuff. I volunteer for various programs for the endangered fish, and I love what I do for those.

I'm no expert. I learn all the time, and I make mistakes. I ask questions, and do my best. I ask advice from those I consider experts, and those I consider hobbyists alike. I'm like everyone else, enthusiastic about what I keep, whether it is my new Fire Eel (yeah!) or it's the Yssichromis sp. "Blue tipped," which is thought to be extinct in the wild. I think a lot of us are eclectic in our tastes, which is why it is so hard to keep just one tank.

Hey ladyB are you going to do that house bill on the transportation clause on tropical fishes..

I have called my representative, emailed my senators and also the President. I've sent the links for this onto my husband, and he will be doing the same. I've also signed several petitions on this.

I plan to resend my emails every day, until I get some responses. I'm hoping that others are doing the same.

cool me as well we need to fight for this hobby and i will get my fish clubs to join in as well..

Yay! Victorians!

The "Christmas Fulu" look alot like the "Dayglow Fulu" I am keeping.

I was keeping a community of cichlids, and happened to purchase a "Dayglow Fulu". I FELL IN LOVE. They are by far, and all Victorians, my favorite cichlid. I did my research, and like you, due to their environmental issues, enjoy keeping them to maintain the species. I found the breeder from which my original "Dayglow" came and bought 20+ fry.

I LOVE the Victoria Cichlids and in time, I am positive I will have more and more species-specific Victoria Lake tanks. Its rare, and wonderful to see so many lovely pics from a Victoria enthusist like yourself.

Hope to be there soon.

Thanks for sharing! :)

The Dayglows and the Xmas fulus are a very similar species. I believe that Lake Victoria's species were still evolving, and that unfortunately we won't get to see what a lot of species would have become.

I really love the Victorians, obviously. My house is over run with them! I'm beginning to get interested in a few other types of cichlids as well, but they require so much larger tanks, where as a colony of Victorians can be house well in a 55 gallon tank.

I'm watching my Yssichromis sp. "Blue tipped" grow up. I'm not seeing any real coloration yet, but the vertical barring on them is beginning to get very prominent. I'm really excited about this species, as they are just so rare, and I can't wait to have my first spawn from them. If their growth rate keeps up, it won't be too much longer!

Oh my.
I've been looking for Lake Vic lovers. My male Kyoga Flamback just passed. (females are fine) He was beaten by the male Pundamila pundamilia that was given to me along with females. I should have known better knowing what I know about Lake Vic fish. Just couldn't turn the baggie full of Vics away.
I thought they would be distracted by my Malawis, rocks, etc. and all would be OK in my 95G. until I could tranfer them into their tank. I was so wrong.

I hope LadyB you put all your knowledge and experience into Lake Vics so us Hobbiests in this Forum can not only see the beauties of these fish, but learn from your experience. Please form a library, catergory for Vics. Those of us that love Lake Vics, will love it more. Those that don't know, you will expand there knowledge.

I vote for that too!!! :thm: I'm starting to get really interested in those Lake Victoria beauties.
