Actually I was thinking of one or two banjo or whiptailed catfish.
Very interesting looking (like a leaf on the bottom of the tank, camoflauged). I've wanted some for awhile... You would want to get a small one so it could grow with your smaller bala and not pose a danger to it. I hear they're great at taking care of uneaten food.
Hmmm.. just doing some research now that I'm talking about them, and it seems most species are mostly brackish. Also, they get much larger than the guy at the LFS said (imagine that!).
I do think you could go a little more ambitious than oto cats in a tank that size. Anyone else have recommendations or know if there is a small, fully FW species of whiptailed cats? I'm interested in finding out more myself.
