I was wondering if any of you have ever purchased a stand from the evil empire known as Wal-Mart. Their stands are cheaper than what I find at the LFS but I am concerned about the quality. These stands come in a box and have to be put together at home.

How well do they hold up and are they sturdy? I do not want to put something as heavy as a tank on what could be made from particle board (I'm really not sure what kind of wood is used) or something that a small child could tip over.

I have my 55 on one. It's sealed particle board, connected with the standard cam connectors that most cheap furniture comes with these days. I'm not worried about it tipping or collapsing, and there's a decent bit of room under it, although not enough for a 10 gal sump. You could probably build better for a little cheaper if you had the tools & inclination, but as a quick fix it's doing the job.

Thanks for the input. I've never been a big fan of those cam connectors. I have a table saw, miter box, and other tools but really have no carpenter skills to speak of. I paid $150 + tax for the stand my 29g tank is sitting on but I want to buy some more tanks and wanted to cut some costs on stands.

Maybe I'll try my hand at building one. This would probably be best and I could save room by putting a 20 or 29 gallon on top and maybe a 10g underneath on a shelf (for a QT).

i have one for my 29g tank and i think it is just as sturdy as my expensive stands and it repels water much better than my stained wood stands. for the price it is an awesome stand.

I think they're fine.

My 29g has one and it's reliable so far.

I have one for a 55 that I've had for about 4 years. It started with a 55 but has 2 25s on it now. It's a pretty good stand.

Wallmart is not bad..I even buy fish from them!

I have that stand for my 20g tank...mine is the metal one...a little hard to put together..but I love it

My 75 gallon, about 800 Lbs. is sitting on a particle board stand. They work. I am actually working on putting together a DIY stand plan. Generic, plans than can be adapted to whatever size tank you have. When I am done I will post it and get some feedback. I figure I can give something back to this forum after all the help I have gotten from it. 35 years of carpentry has given me enought experience to hand on to someone that may not know the ins and outs of carpentry...Please stay tuned. Coming to a DIY section near you soon.

I used one for my reef and never felt it would fall apart.. and you all know reefs are really heavy.

Good stand. Nothing special in terms of build quality but for the price you shouldn't expect *that* much. Definitely better looking and more sturdy than those iron stands.. and bang for the buck? They can't be beat

I'd much rather have a nice piece of wood furniture, those $200 stands you see at pet stores. However, if it wasn't a main show tank I can't think of another stand I'd rather have than the Walmart ones.. and don't think they look bad, theyr'e good looking stands when they're set up.

big als online has decent looking cheap stands. i have one under my 90g, but it has bowed a little(i think the floor did too) and i recieved it with some knicks in it.
