Wal-Mart bulbs planted tank

I've done absolutely nothing for the ones I've got. like i said earlier, the one in the back left isn't doing very well at all, so it either needs special attention or may not be at true underwater plant. The others are doing really well, and a few of them have small pods that have formed and are looking like they are about to detach from the main plant and start rooting themselves. There is already white roots growing from them. its pretty fun to watch them grow.

Did someone mention I would have to take them out and provide a dormant period for them?
What happens if I just leave them in to grow?

You could leave them in the gravel, and as long as the bulbs have been able to take in enough nutrients, they should start sending up new leaves after a few weeks of inactivity. About 5 of my bulbs, along with a dwarf lily, have recently come out of a dormant period after about 3 or 4 weeks. The dwarf lily took almost 5 weeks. During the time, I just left them buried in the gravel in the tank. Some species of aponogetons do not need a dormant period. The rest of my bulbs have not gone dormant yet, even though some of them have been going for over 6 months. One of them, with red tinted leaves and flower spikes, has been constantly putting up new leaves and flower spikes for about 3 and a half months now. I have to prune it every couple of weeks.
It's kind of hard to tell the exact variety of apon that you get from the walmart bulbs since they are usually hybrid.

whew!! I was worried that I'd have to take them out and have a completely plantless tank for a while. I think my fish would be mad at me if I did that. Glad I don't have to! Thanks for the info.

If they don't start to grow again after a few weeks, check to see if they are still firm or if they have gone spongey. If they feel soft, then the bulb most likely has died and should be removed before it rots.

ok, I'll check it out. There are a few bulbs that haven't started growing yet, I should probably check them out to make sure they aren't dead. I was hoping they'd start growing soon.

How do you prune the lily bulbs?

Anyone get the bulb that sprouts the redish/pink arrowhead shaped leaves? Been trying to identify it.

The Aponogeton one that sprouted is growing like crazy. I swear that the runners it sends up go from the bottom of the tank to the water's surface in one day! The rest of the bulbs (5 small sized ones that are more oblong or egg shaped from Petco and 2 walmart round ones) have not sprouted 2-3 weeks later. They are not getting soft yet or getting white fuzzies, though one of the Walmart ones is getting brown fuzzies (I saw someone else's did the same thing before it sprouted so I am hopeful).

do the reddish arrow-head shaped leaves look like the ones in the bottom left hand corner of the larger pic of the tank?

those aponogenetons (lilies, i think). They are fast growers and big plants. i have some in my ten gallon and it was massive in a short amount of time. Dont worry about trimming it, all i do is jsut pluck off the akward or large leaves and be done with it.

Good luck and nice looking tank!

Kinda hard to tell. Mine is still very small. The largest leaf being only 2-3 inches, paper thin, and solid redish/pink colored.

My digital camera eats thru regular batteries like crazy, but when I can get some new ones I am going to start posting some pics. Will be easier to show things instead of me trying to explain them. lol
