Every time I purchase fish or plants at wal-mart, they are dying, sick, or newly arrived - probably shipped straight from the wild. Every fish I have purchased from wal-mart died within 1 week. Anyone have horror stories to share from bad dealers? How do you go about finding a good source of healthy fish, and an honest dealer? Ideally, I want to buy healthy fish from a breeder.

All the good-looking plants from wal-mart are packed into a tiny container with some kind of wool that takes hours and damage to the plant to remove, not to mention a few snails that quickly reproduce. Yada yada yada... I'm just a little ticked off with my experiences at that store and I thought I might warn others, though that is probably well known anyhow...

Wal mart is horrible....the one but my house especially... i went in there the other day and made my way to the fish as usual. they had a tank of small angels (about 3 dozen or so cramped in this small tank) and about a third of them were dead. just lying there on the the bottom of the tank.. i was disgusted  ...poor fishies

I highly recomend finding a small LFS in your area. Even if it's an hour away, it would be worth it and the fish should be able to survive the trip home.
:read:
Avoid those big stores like the plage or you might introduce a plague into your tank.

I was at wal-mart yesterday, and my girlfriend was shopping so i decided to go look at the fish to kill time. I found a lady there buying fish and an attendant that obviously had no clue what she was doing. The lady had just purchased a pleco for her angelfish tank and then turned to the attendant and said "give me one of those blue striped fish as well" pointing to the malawi cichlid tanks. The attendant was like "yeah they should be fine together" :duh: . So i decided to step in and said "Maam you may not want to put that in your tank unless you don't want your angelfish anymore. They are very aggressive and can only be kept with other african cichlids". I even pointed out some compatable fish, but the lady was uninterested and decided the pleco was enough.

Are walmart is good. i have 2 give the guy credet... last time i was ther there was only one dead gold fish...

Wal-Mart, Meijers or any other grocery stores are not the best places to buy fish. The tanks are normally dirty and the employees are only trained to operate a fish net, barely. An aquaintance (not the smartest person I have known) went to Wal-Mart, she told the employee about the numerous livebearers she had in her tank. The employee recommended that she purchase an Oscar as that would be compatible with the guppies in her tank. Needless to say, the guppies and platy's started disapperaing or ending up on the aquarium floor with horrendous wounds.

Wal-mart is almost funny if the fish couldn't feel pain. I mean people just doing stupid stuff. Needless to say though there are exceptions.

When I was at walmart last week with my boyfriend we were looking at the aquariums and there were several dead fish in the tanks, one tank had just a dead pleco....so when the attendant came to help someone else, my bf informed him of the numerous dead fish, he said okay thanks. And when he was done with the lady he just walked away...couldnt even take the 2 seconds to scoop the dead fish out of the tank. Sorry, couldnt resist posting ANOTHER walmart horror story lol.

Is there a reason you keep buying fish from them?
