i went to both the Walmart in glen burnie and the petsmart in pasadena md today. my first encounter was at WM. They had maybe 15 tanks none were clean all had dead fish and only one did not have ick, gravel had never been cleaned( at least it looked that way) and they had 11 pacus in one 10 gallon tank and 9 md size oscars in another. the petsmart i went to had just gotten in their new shipment of fish. when i went to the oscar tank there were approx. 10 small oscars in the tank 6 with bad, very bad case of ick and 4 that were clean( they were clean because they were just put into that tank) i did manage to save one oscar that had not been introduced into the tank he was still in his shipping bag. is there anyone that can be contacted about these conditions or what can be done? sorry about the long rant but i am still a little peaved about this.

I think all of us understand you to some degree. My local WalMart stores are absolutely horrible. It looks like they're selling dead fish and the live ones just happened to get in there. Part of me wishes I had the time and financial ability to aid the store in their poor fishkeeping skills. Actually, I just think they don't give a crap. The local Pet Smarts are much better. The only dead fish I usually see are in the bottom feeder fish tanks. Although central filtration is convenient and what both the stores use, I tend to be afraid of it, just because if one tank becomes infected soon all others will.

There is also a small local pet store near my house in Massillon, OH called It's A Jungle. They make WalMart look good. It makes me cringe to walk through their small over-crammed fish room. 95% of their filters are old falling apart spong filters. They have 5 or 6 Cichlids in a 75 gallong tank with one sponge filter. They have a 75 gallong tank loaded with goldfish with two sponge filters, a couple air stones, and probably 50+ dead fish.

I wish there was more we could do. Just because of what I've seen, it's made me want to open my own fish shop. I'm pretty sure it will never happen, unless I hit the Mega Millions or something...but other than that, it's more of a dream. There's an empty store near my house that I go by everyday and sometimes I can see my store taking place there. All separate tanks, not the "12,000 gallon" crap acrylic systems made up of 120 10gallon tanks. Well, there I go again, dreaming of my own store.

As bad as it is to hear about the conditions of tanks in these stores, do we really need the same basic topic on a daily basis? And violator, 120x10 is 1200. :P

Just curious, how did you save the Oscar?
I'd call the manager if you are worried about it. However, you aren't going to change them. Buying healthy fish at Walmart is like trying to buy a Lamborghini at a Yugo dealer.

i bought the one oscar that had not been introduced into the tank, he is about 1 1/2 in and is in my 10 gallon quarantine waiting to go into my 90 gallon tank.

Contact the Petsmart Petcare manager. If nothing is done, contact the Store Director. If that doesn't help, contact the regional petcare manager.

Also, ask them if they are treating the ich. When I worked there, new shipments always brought in ick, and unfortuantly, sometimes shipements come before current stock is sold. Petsmart treats for ich after every shipment.

My Walmart is bad (brown water/ dead fish), but my Petsmart is pretty nice actually. The fish are for the most part healthy, and they have a good selection.

I don't buy from walmart or petsmart so I don't know about your problem. AS far as my fish store goes they make sure they only put compatible species together the tanks aren't too overcrowded and there is no disease that I have ever seen in there. Most of the staff is nice okay all of the staff is nice except for one person who happens to be the owner. They do tend to try to sell a lot of brineshrimp though

:OT: I was in petsmart the other day and there were some guys actually having an intelligent conversation about fish! I was impressed(just cause in general they are so crappy) This employee actually had a 100+ gallon discus tank and was talkin about how essential water changes are. Then they actually started talking about how awful it was to see clueless people buy fish and bowls etc. I wouldn't be surprised if it was one of you guys, lol ;) BACK ON TOPIC- I would also try to talk to someone in charge, at least try to get them to hire some employees who know what they are doing and want to solve and prevent the multiple problems, I mean thats the least they could do if they don't care themselves.
