water changes.... a silly question

Well, if you do it as per the above, you won't be overdosing.

Check your manufacturers instructions for correct dose - a little over that is not going to do any harm.

For example, Seachem Prime can be dosed at 5 times regular dose to alleviate nitrite poisoning 'in an emergency'. There is also a proper dose for regular water conditioning, and one for dealing with ammonia in tap water, to detox. So the question of what is an overdose depends on what you are using it for.

But anyway, dosing the whole tank prior to refilling is not an overdose, and in general a small overdose is not going to cause you a problem anyway.

I just use the kitchen table and put a chair on top of it. The bucket goes on teh chair and I siphon it back in that way. For my salt water, which is too far away from the kitchen table, I use a small low flow pump. I have it attached to a hose and I drop the pump into my bucket and set back and relax... when that bucket is done I can just drop the pump in another bucket. It works great. I position the return in such a way as to not disturb the sand.

I have a 29g tank and still use the siphon method to refill it. I sit a 27 in. barstool on top of a kitchen chair and sit the bucket with the siphon on top of the bar stool. I went to a home improvement store and bought a larger tube for the siphon (like the ice maker tubbing but bigger) to make it go a little faster. I know this is not the best way to go about it but it works for me.

PYTHON all the way!!!

It takes the water out & when you close the valve, it puts the water back in & I use PRIME to instantly take the chloramines out.

DOESN'T GET MUCH BETTER, even though over the years you get technical difficulties with the Python, it is better than the luggin' the bucket & siphoning alternative.

python...
but a little on the expensive side.. but can be made for cheap! lol

Get a small water pump, pond pump, powerhead etc.. and a hose long enough to go to your tank from your bucket,Toss the pump into your bucket put your hose in the tank, plug it in ,and the water will be pumped into your tank..fill and repeat.. thats the way i used to do it with buckets

I have 2 tanks ( well 3 but I don't really count my 5 gal) a 55 and a 20 gal and yes I haul buckets. Not my favorite task but I do it every week cause I tend to stock heavily and that leads to dirty water!! It may look clear but it is still dirty to my fish/inverts so bucket haulin' I go... yeah my husband thinks I am crazy too but hey he PAYS for a gym membership and he doesn't even get any fish!!!
At least I sweat for somthing!!!
