Water changes, baby snails, plants and overstocked?

Look up Japanese trapdoor snails, it looked pretty much like that to me, but like I said I haven't kept them. The more you feed the more most snails will reproduce. Not bladder, ramshorn or trumpet snails or mystery snails either, that pretty much sums up most of my snail experiences in 40+ years. Although recently I have very small, very flat rams horn spiral type snails I haven't had before, you never know what critters you may get. Maybe the shop you got it at would like some freebies? Not likely, but worth asking...You may have to sneak some out to the compost pile...& feed less!

Debris (food & poo) can go inside hollow decorations & stay in there rotting, molding & making a mess. The outside is likely only biofilm or algae, no big deal (snail & pleco food). Uneaten food & detritus can be snail food too, you may be very sorry...check soon!

BN plecos are pretty big for a 10g, even females, though smaller, get to 3 inches. Males can grow to 4+ inches. Let it grow for now if it's small. Awfully big for a 10g, males tend to hide, females are out & about more even when smaller IME.

The pleco Is only a few months old. I think I read they are hard to identify sex until about 6 months. So time will tell if it grows a bunch of bristles. This one does come out quite a bit but startles easily and hides. I know my tank is pretty cluttered, but it has a lot of shelter for the pleco.

The local store might take the snails. I can ask next time I am in. That is ultimately how I got the pleco. A customer had breed them and was bringing a Bunch of them in when I was in the shop. As the manager knew we had been waiting for one - we were given one of the babies.

I move the decorations when I clean the area so I can use the gravel vac under where the decorations were. And change the area I gravel vac with each cleaning- approx 1/3 of the tank. So the area under the items are/will be cleaned about every 3 weeks. Do I need to do any specific type cleaning with the decorations themselves?

It depends on whether the water flows out when you move them. Some have 2 biggish holes so "stuff" will come out, others don't it can be trapped. A little algae can help soften their look (I kinda like that "patina") but your pleco may keep them pretty clean. Sounds like you do a good job vacuuming,

Hi,
I’m a relatively new fish keeper too and one good tip I was given was to clean the decor with a toothbrush. This will help remove any algae in the little areas.
I purchased 2 spotted snails weeks ago for my tank and soon got just 1 baby. It’s still small. Nit even half the size of the other 2 so I don’t think they grow too fast.. as far as I know with snails they will only reproduce if there is enough food so try not to worry too much.

I certainly wouldn’t say the tank is over stocked either. Go with the flow and see what works best for your tank. No 2 tanks are the same.

Welcome to AC!

Maybe you can start a new thread with a pic of your snail. I don't know that I can help, but probably someone can. Besides, we like pics!
