How do you guys top the water off in your tanks that is lost from evaporation?

Do you buy distilled water? DeIonizer water? RO water?

Or do you put tap water in? Do you condition it somehow first?

I am specifically talking about adding water back to the aquarium to replace water that has evaporated.

Just dechlorinated tap water for me. If you are doing enough water changes, the source water shouldn't vary too much from the tank any way.

I too use dechlorinated tap water.

I just top if off once a week.most weeks it's down about 3in. my water comes from a well no need to add anything

I don't just top off tanks. By the time enough water has evaporated that you would need to top it off again, it's about time for your next water change anyway.

I have glass covers that fit the tops of my tank, and a hood over those. Doing WCs every week I rarely see the level get below the top band on the tank. If it does I just wait the 1-2 days and do a normal WC.

Might wanna re-think that one.. this is a common mistake made by people with well-water

your correct that your water isnt chlorinated... but there is still many things in well-water that can be harmfull to fish (heavy metals for one)

might wanna think about buying some prime.

as far as the post... I fill a bucket with tap water-- dose it with dechlorinator.. and use it to top off my tanks

I am on well water as well and have been for 6 yrs. I never paid to much attention to it untill lately when I found my itrate was running high in my reef tank. I tested my well water and sure enough due to spring runoff it contained nitrate.I now use an RO/DI unit and all is well and I dont have to worry about water conditions anymore...
