Weather Loach Problem

Thank you for the link it was very informative. Yes, I did read up on him after my bf brought him home. I feed him by taking a pinch of blood worms and making sure it is saturated w/ water, then I put my hand in front of his face and let them fly. This seems to work b/c then he starts filtering away. I am afraid if I dont do it this way the other fish will get all the food. He is only about 5 inches long now, and I also have 2 irridescent sharks that I aquired with the tank that will also need a larger tank eventually, so either I will be purchasing a bigger tank in the future or I will be trading some fish at the LFS. My LFS said slightly brackish(1 tsp per 5 gal) will be acceptable for the goby but without that he would only live up to 6 mos. I do appreciate your advice. Thanks.

You know what I had this same problem Unfortunately my clown loach died. Everything was the same as yours. I guess the heat got to him.

Just a note, but I get the impression you are using aquarium salts? You need to use marine salt for the gobie and not aquarium salt.

So will marine salt be acceptable for my freshwater fish for long periods of time or was my LFS wrong when he said that the salt would be okay for my freshwater fish?

Your LFS is very wrong.

A brackish tank isn't just a freshwater tank with some aquarium salt put in it. Brackish water exists where freshwater meets oceanwater and the only way to duplicate that is with ocean salt.

Only other brackish fish can live in the same tank with the goby. If you put your freshwater fish in there, they will die. If you put the goby in aquarium salt water, it will die.

Frankly, if you put all your fish in aquarium salt, they will all die sooner than they should. Aquarium or table or kosher or whatever salts are for medicinal use only. Never for long term use. It will interfer with the fishes' osmoregulation and shorten their lifespan.

Thank you very much for the advice. I will have to break the news to my boyfriend that the violet goby is going to the LFS. I won't send him back to the walmart that he came from seeing how they sold him as a freshwater fish. They were selling spotted puffers as freshwater too. It's such a shame.

You welcome, and I'm sorry I had to tell you all this. Gobies are great fish, otherwise.
