What are sponge filters?

I hear alot of talk of this, And I don't know what you all mean per say, so can some one post a pick of what exactly this is? Will I still need carbon? And will it work in the following filters???

Penguin 350
Penguin 150
Emperor 400
Or any Eclipse filters???

And any up keep info would be greatly appreciated. Wanting to start saving money with this, is this the way to go??

They are air driven.

A sponge filter is a filter made of a sponge and an air tube. Air is pumped into the bottom of the tube and as it displaces the water above it, it causes new water to enter in through the sponge thus filtering it. They are very effective and have been around forever.

Another way is to mount a powerhead on top of the tube drawing the water up into the tube and then out the outlet.

No where to add carbon to one.

Fixed your title Breeze! Yeah, sponge filters are separate from your other filters, they sit right on the in the tank on the bottom.

I personally don't have a use for them. A lot of breeders use them because of the fry, they won't get sucked in like an HOB filter.

If you're interested in packing that Emporer so that you won't go thru very many cartridges, let me know, I can tell you how to do that.

I only buy new cartridges when they are on sale, Drs. F&S runs awesome sales on them a couple times a year. And with the way I arrange the filter media now the other filter media traps the dirt first, the cartridges don't get crummy like they used to. They barely need a rinsing now. There's not a lot of carbon in those cartridges and my water is always clear so I don't worry about the carbon getting old. Nitrifying bacteria will also grow on the carbon pieces and that's a good thing too. I think I'm down to only putting new cartridges in my filters every 6 months or longer.

i have a few like in pics and i added a under gravel filter top to the top of them that hold a carbon container so if you want some carbon it can go there

you really dont need to add carbon unless you dose the tank with meds. that said, sponge filters are not usually used in display tanks, but in hospital tanks (since they look kinda ugly). hospital tanks are easy to take down and clean, so you wont need to use carbon to remove meds.
