What camera do you use?

Nope. If you try, the whole camera instantaneously becomes a fine powder which usually results in ruined film. I've never tried it myself because I don't want to ruin my camera, but a friend of my cousin's classmate swore it happened to him TWICE. I guess some people are just slow.

Yeah, point and shoot doesn't really fit well as a category any more as just about any camera has a fully automatic mode to do quick, easy, shots.

I use a Canon digital Elf 110. I love its size and simplicity and it takes decent shots but its PURELY point and shot I have almost no control over settings with it.

I use and love my kodak easyshare dx4530 (5MP). I've owned 3 digi cameras in teh last two years and this is my favorite due to its high quality pictures, versitility, software, optional hardware, and ease of use.

SLRs (although most of them have a slew of automated features these days) usually offer a full manual mode, which means the photographer is responsible for setting film speed, shutter speed, aperture, and focusing the lens.

Point and shoot cameras do not offer a manual mode, you basically must trust that the factory or programmed settings will give you the results you want.

I still shoot an old (about 20 years) Fujica STX-1N fully manual SLR. I've got the standard 50mm lens, a 28mm to 70mm macro/zoom, an 80mm to 200 zoom, a 2x teleconverter and a few other odd and ends.

So then, how do I vote with my Canon G3, which is not an SLR, but also allows completely manual control over aperture and shutter speed?

SLRs enables you to take so many different kinds of pictures. If you have ever seen a pic of a freeway where the cars tailights look like lines, thats that kind of pic that has been taken by a SLR. These cameras can be used to shoot very quickly similar to a Poin and shoot camera(mine goes to 1/4000th of a sec), but it can depend on how much light there is. They also give you many other options such as different types of lenes for all types of views such as wide angle and telescoping lenses.Telescoping lenses a the really long ones that are even heaver than the camera itself, and what many photographers for sports and news uses. which can have a virtually infinite limit of how far it can see. Id get a telescoping lens of someone would let me about 4 or 5 Gs, which is more than my D100. Now if only I can use that underwater....
