What can I add?

I have 6 white cloud minnows living in a very sparsely planted 10-gallon tank. Those fish mainly stay in the top portion of the tank, making it look like I have an empty tank full of water. I wanted to add some color and more activity to the tank but don’t know what or how many more fish I can add to it. The tank is fairly new and yes, sad/sorry to say, is being fishy-cycled (long story) so I know I can’t get some of the more sensitive type fish. I’m also hoping to slowly plant the tank as I learn how to maintain things properly and keep the plants and fish living and thriving too. Could I add a few more fish to the tank? I was thinking a few, maybe 3 or 4 platy fish. And what are one or two extremely easy plants to start off with? I already have some anacharis and some java moss (which I’m trying to revive).

Cherry barbs will look good red. Or neon tetras. Plants like anubias, hornwort, anacharis, java moss or java fern are pretty easy to care for plants

You might want to check on the temperature requirements for the minnows you have and the fish you want. The white clouds prefer a much lower temp that is as suitable for most other tropicals.

Would it make sense to have only 1 or 2 cherry barbs with the other fish? I thought they needed to be with more of their kind?

Currently my tank is unheated, but I do have a heater for if/when I need it. I believe minnows prefer cooler temps but are also tolerant of the lower end temps required for tropicals.

Hmmm.. I would highly recommend waiting till tank is fully cycled. Then, check out: Shrimp, Scarlet Badis(Dario dario), mini-moth catfish (Erithistes sp), and pygmy sunfish. Java fern and Anubias would likely do okay, as would some hardy cryptocorynes such as C. wendtii

I'm planning on waiting, just wanting to do some research ahead of time. I don't think I've heard too much about those other fish, so I'm glad for the suggestions and I'll be sure to check them out.

good plan on waiting for it to finish cycling before adding any other fish. adding more now would only complicate things. i also suggest trying out some easy to do plants and maybe a nice little peice of driftwood to attatch some java moss and java fern to. make sure you are using compact florescent lighting if your 10g uses the screw in kind of bulbs, rather than the regular screw ins because those aren't meant for plants. your white clouds may decide to mate once the cycling process is completed.

u should get some corys, like 4-6, they'll help keep ur gravel free from rotting food, and they'll also add alot of activity

Cories are tropical, the minnows prefer cooler water temperatures that cories would not do well in.

I would suggest rosy red minnows, the "feeder fish" at the petstores, but they actually grow quite large (2in-3in) and add interest and activity to your tank. They learn to recognize you and will come up to the front of the tank to beg for food when you walk by, plus they also prefer colder waters and would be a great match with white clouds.
