what can i put with discus??

Sand is just as easy to clean as BB. Both will keep debris on top where the flow should be enough to keep it moving until the filters grab it. I have sand in all my tanks and never vacuum because there is nothing to vacuum.

If you want 'high quality' discus you will need to go to a private breeder. This is 'high quality' as in the 'right' shape, colors, etc. If you just want good pets you can get your discus from a decent LFS and pick healthy ones that look good to you. I think it is analogous to dogs. If you want the show standards you need to go to the right places and be willing to pay for it. If you want a good pet you can go by what you think looks good. I have gotten from both. The ones from the breeder cost more than any of the ones at my work were marked for.

Again, the ones from the LFS seem to be hardier. The ones from breeders who maintain super pristine water quality are not as tolerant of different water parameters and are not as forgiving of water quality. I think you should start with the LFS ones and if you get into them more you can always move up to the high end ones.

I'd be real fearful of the internal and external parasites found on discus in an LFS. That is the number 1 reason I get mine from reputable people. If you do purchase from an LFS, quarantine and treat them for parasites.

NLS's Thera+A food has garlic to deal with internal parasites. And external parasites should not be an issue.

I didn't ask where they get the discus from. It's called "Aquarium on rt. 4". i checked out both those places. Blue gold doesn't have a website, any idea on their pricing?

PS my tap water is at 7.5 pH

That pH should be fine as long as it is stable. Mine were in higher and did great. The plants in their current setup are helping keep it down to about 7.0.

is your gold nugget bugging the discus at all? I'm still thinking of what fish to get for algae clean-up, any suggestions?

This is where the fish come from that arrive in Blue Gold Aq.
www.discussanctuary.com.my. I don't know if you'll be able to view these pictures or not, but a picture is worth 1,000 words http://forum.simplydiscus.com/showthread.php?t=60502
PH 7.5 treated tap water is fine. Mine is 7.6 and they spawn and hatch fry in it just fine. For algae, can't beat the bristlenose plecos. They never bother the discus and the ones I raise can tolerate the higher discus tank temps.

by treated you mean declorinated right? Now that we're on the topic, what is the best (least stressfull) wasy to treat the water/ do WC's?

yeah the ones at lfs are crap (most of the time) this is because they need a bigger profit margin and its easier to sell a 30-$50fish rather than a $125 fish and breeders know they can get a better price so they lfs buys the cheaper "crap-er" discus which are not as good quality

this isnt all ways the case though
