what can i put with discus??

by treated you mean declorinated right? Now that we're on the topic, what is the best (least stressfull) wasy to treat the water/ do WC's?

You get a bottle of "Prime" add it to the water acccording to the instuctions.Simple like one capful for every 50 gallons.

Helps to know the age of the Discus you are buying.Like humans stop growing at about 16 years of age the Discus will stop at around 18 months. An Eheim filter is not a good enough reason not to do 2 water changes of 40-50% weekly. If the fish are smaller than 3.5 inches and under a year old you should more to get them to grow and remain healthy.

Yes, by treated water I mean using a dechlor product. I use NovAqua+, do two 40-50% water changes a week using a phython and before I add water back to the tank, add the full amount of dechlor product to the tank, make sure the water coming out of the faucet is the same temp as whats in the tank, and refill. The discus usually stay on the opposite side of the tank while I do the gravel vacs and water changes.

I am on well water so I do not need dechlor. But I drain, then fill with water of the correct temp. Step up slowly. Don't jump into a big water change, it is very easy to screw things up if you are not used to it. And check the temp coming out as you fill. Some houses, apartments, etc. will not be putting out the same tmep halfway through the water change as when you started and checked.

My goldnugget has never bothered my discus. When I asked on forums before I put them together they said they are fine with discus. As always, there are exceptions. Bristlenose are also fine with discus and from the same waters in nature. They are very good with algae.

In addition to the eheim what would I need to do for weekly water changes? On friday I'm going to go by the shop agian and look for another pleco for my other tank. I'l ask for a nugget while I'm there.

To the person who said you only need discus and some african's. My other tank has a african mix that actualy works. I've got a oscar, 2 parrots, 2 flowerhorns (trying to see how I can sell them), and a cat (forgot the name, he's spotted).

For a gold nugget pleco, be sure to have driftwood in the tank. They need wood in their diet.

I will, as soon as I get the tank stabilzed I'll throw it in. I'll start out with the tetra school and add the drifwook and pleco and when everything is god I'l add my discus. :angryfire:

Unless your LFS has specialty tanks for discus i would strongly suggest getting Discus from a reputable breeder.

While the High end Discus at the breeder are kept in Pristine water.. they also have many 'B' quality fish on hand.
their Discus are properly fed and kept..I have yet to find the same quality at a LFS in my area.

as far as using sand keep in mind that sand is prone to compacting and will need to be stirred occassionally or you may form pockets of Gas.(formed from anaerobic bacteria)

In regard to Garlic in food.. Garlic has not yet ben proven to stop parasite infestation.
and not all garlic is the same. Garlic is 'believed ' to help strengthen the immune system.

If you have a reputable LFs that keeps Discus and feeds them properly and the ddiscus show no signs of stunting..you may consider purchasing these Discus. but I would recomend looking at the Discus from the Breeder before you purchase any Discus.
yes you can make the agrguement that these Discus are kept in Pristine water(they should be for optimal health) but even so healthy discus tend to have a stronger immune system to start with.

I have several Discus I purchased from a local breeder and they are far more superior compared to LFS stock.
again this may vary from region to region.

african mix??

2 tanks, the tanks listed I consider an african mix. I honestly am not sure but that wa what I was told. I haven't researched them yet and I know the flowerhorns aren't compatible with the other fish. I'll check out the blue gold place in queens before getting anything from the local spot. I just don't want to pay top dollar for a fish I have no experience with and has a rep to be hard to maintain.
