looking to replace an old Fluval 303 on my 55 -

purchased the filter when it was a community tank - now its a Cichlid tank with about 12 Malawi's. Its in my office so i want quiet the 303 is making a bit of noise. and has trouble keeping the water clear - i have a power head with sponge to help out.

I also want to get big enough that i can take it to a 75 or 90.

What would you folks suggest?

Keep going guys - how about one i can afford :) The FX5 is nice but its rated up to 400 gallons - overkill for a 55. And about $275 USD.

go for one of the eheim pro11 range, go for the 2026 and over filter a bit.

i used 2 fx5s on my tank but would have got the pro 3s if it fit my cabinet.
the fx5s are good though

I used to have a 303. I just bought a 305. The new one is much easier to disconnect and maintain. I can’t hear any noise at all.

I like my Rena XP3s because they are inexpensive and do a great job of keeping the water crystal clear. :) Even with a bunch of Malawis in the tank. I also have an Aquaclear 70 on my Malawi tank, but its more for surface agitation....the extra filtration is just bonus.

i am fairly new to canister filters but i just started using a rena xp2 and i love it its quiet as a church mouse and seems to do a wonderful job keeping the water clear. plus it was only 74.99 at big als.

My Fluval 404 on my 75g south american tank works great....a relatively quiet work horse.
