on something like a 20-29 gal. tank with a stand? I'm not necessarily looking for something fancy or esp. modern. I was just at my LFS and looked at their set ups. How do you know if they are asking too much?

They are generally asking too much.

Do a little research on brands like Oceanic, All-Glass, Top-Fin... and you will find that there are differences in quality. Once you pick a manufacturer, shop around for specific tank types. You will know a good deal when (if) you see one.

I'm selling my 40 G with 20 G sump and an extra 30 G long tank with stand and overflow box and return pump and heater and powerhead and other accessories for $150. Still no buyers.

I seen a deal at a discount pet store, it was 55gal.tank,hood ,light and stand for 240.00. I bought my 46 gal. from an ad for 120.00 and that was tank, hood, two lights, filter and stand. There is an 150 gal. for 180.00 at petsmart that was chipped.

the LFS here has the same 55 gal special for 90$

An LFS here has a special this week. 125g tank only for $300. That's not bad for brand new.

If you're not in a hurry, I suggest checking local classifieds and craigslist or ebay. A free one could pop up from time to time. I got my 20g free from craigslist. Came w/ some accessories too.

I'm not in a hurry to buy since it is the Christmas season. The only LFS that is in my town is Feeder's Supply. I doubt they have deals as good as some of the larger chains. Thanks for all your input. I think I have a better idea now of what to look for.

WOW i was wondering what "craigslist" was so i googled it and there are A BUNCH of aquariums..29G set up with stand and EVERYTHING even a oscar...for 75 bucks!!! WOW!!! :bowing:

i paid $140 for my 20G AGA with hood, lights and black wooden stand. i believe i overpaid, thinking it was the lowest deal in my neighborhood. plus i was impatient (this hobby requires a lot of patience!). i think if i paid $120 and less, i would've felt better. but whats done is done, i'll be smarter in my choices in the future.
