What fish (other than bettas) don't need a filter

If you consider an efficiency apartment "decent" living than cool, good for you you're low maintenance.

Your ID contains the word "bush" so I'll question anything you say (now were there WMD's in this gallon tank or not?)

vague language to prove a point that was not made. you have 'hic' in youre name... do you sleep with your cousins?

grow up. that sort of statement has no place in a decent conversation among intelligent adults. are you in high school? if so nevermind.

So I'm a little worried about getting flamed, but I'll say this anyway:

IMHO, wickedmax, your set up isn't too bad, provided you keep up with the water changes. But, of course, having said that, I'd also like to emphasize that it could be much, much better. Please do consider getting a bigger tank for your new little friend, one with a good filter and lots plants to break up the current-- he'd appreciate it, I'm sure. :)

I do have a suggestion for you, though, if you decide to tough out your current situation. I've actually seen little undergravel filtration kits made especially for one gallon goldfish bowl set ups. They don't cost much, and would certainly be better than nothing. If the vase or whatever it is that you're using now doesn't have room for the filter, buy a new bowl and move everything over. Hiding the filter intake thingie from view with the bamboo shoots shouldn't be difficult, either, so you can still have a visually pleasing set up.

Just out of curiousity, what are you feeding the lil' betta dude? I know that some vase things are sold under the belief that the betta will nibble on whatever plant is in there with it-- rest assured that the betta living this way is an unhealthy betta, indeed.

Liz sold it to her because thats Liz's job. to sell fish. It doesn't matter what the customer is going to do with it if you're just an employee for a retailer. If they want it then you sell it. Don't be so hard on her.

I have worked in petstores for about 2 years. I am almost 18.

Someone with that mindset should not work in petstores, although many sadly do.

Im feeding him Betta Bio-gold by Hikari. He seems to like it (He eats about2 maybe 3 within a minuate after I put them in). He's an active little guy, HUGE fins. I like the set-up I have now, but I am thinking about doing a 10 gal with a divder down the middle. Give him the side w/o the filter (to avoid too much current, and put a cory cat with him. and them something (don't know what) in the other five gallon.

Feel free to make suggestions. and also, will the cory cats bother ghost shrimp?

For those of you who were bent on flaming someone who just wants to enjoy a beautiful betta here are some pics of Raphael. Still seems very happy and active.

Yep, that's a beautiful betta you have crammed in that tiny bowl. I especially like the filter and heater, how did you get them invisible?

I'm sure he's ecstatic.

While we're in fairyland, I am looking for someone who breeds tooter snorks, any ideas? I plan on housing them in a plastic bucket with a 2 foot iridescent shark and a school of pilot fish that I will acclimate to freshwater with pixie dust and angelfish food cake...

:fairy: :joe: :bday:

Was that one as good for you as it was for me?

Yeah and I'm on a roll tonight :mad2: :mad2: :mad2:

Let's recap, 12 people posted on this subject to answer your question. 10 told you not to do this, or suggested you improve on your idea. 2 people said it was OK. You (of course being a total freaking idiot) choose to ignore 83.3% of the advice you were given, and chose to do your stupid betta bowl anyways. Here it is:

Us: graphicdesign_r

Roan Art: "Of course they need a filter"

liv2padl: "they, like all aquatic organisms maintained in an aquarium, DO require a filter"

reziztor: "the average hobbyist definetly needs the filters to keep the water clean."

sardesign: "maybe an "advanced" aquarist need not a filter because of their scheduled maintenance... it's still not adviseable."

SnakeIce: "Far to many bettas have a shortened life span because of lack of filtration and adequate water volume. Room to excercise is important to keep a fish healthy and a little bit of water movement encourages that excercise."

stingray4540: "I never understood why bettas are sold in little 1/4 gallon bowls and then keeped in something similar at someones home?!!"

indiginess: "i got a nice one for ya, remember the 'Betta Vase'? 'the fish will eat the plant roots to survive'.... kicked one over once in a store. just to make someone deal with a suffocating fish."

TKOS: "When I did have a 1 gallon tank I found a really tiny sponge filter with air pump at Walmart that fit really well and certainly helped make the tank conditions better."

happychem: (in response to misopeenut) "Wow is that ever wildly inaccurate. It is most certainly not possible to do this and provide for long term fish health."

mandimoron: "Please do consider getting a bigger tank for your new little friend, one with a good filter and lots plants to break up the current-- he'd appreciate it, I'm sure."

Them: misopeenut, robush4, YOU.

I am sure you run into people like me. There is the occasional person who will call a spade a spade. I run into HUNDREDS of people like you. I sometimes feel like the bumper sticker has it all right: "Stupid People Are Breeding". It's true, and you breed like pond snails.

If you ignore the advice, why bother asking the question?

I like asking questions, and I do take people's advice. I DONT however listen to people as rude as yourself. I came to this forum to get information from those with more experience than myself. Up until this thread, I have encountered very polite people who are more than willing to provide helpful information without sounding like a condescending, pompous jackass. You broke that streak. I think that you will find most people entering a new hobbie will be very receptive to advice as long as it is hlepful and tactful. If you just tell people they are "a freaking idiot" whenever they ask a question, of course they are going to be reluctantto take your advice.

For those of you interested in our orginial conversation, Im moving Raphael back home from college in a week and once there He'll move into a 10g with some tankmates (a couple of black mollies, african dwarf frogs, and a cory). Any other polite suggestions will be considered.
