My son likes Tiger Barbs and has a 45 gallon tank. He like the pitus catfish and Blood Parrots. Do Gouramis get along with Tiger Barbs? Do Silver Dollors get along with TigerBarbs? Looking for a nice larger type fish besides Barbs. Would like a top, middle and bottom fish in the tank. Amy mix besides other Barbs would be nice. We already have Golds and Cherrys in my daughters tank. I would like to try something different. Thanks for any help.

Gennerally I would avoid gouramis and tiger barbs. Those long pectoral feelers of the gouramis become great targets.

Pictus should be fine, though I don't know how big they get. They are known for munching down on any fish that can fit in their mouth. I would go check out the fish profiles on the main page.

See if your son like cory catfish. They stay much smaller and can be kept in a group of 5 or so.

How about some of the smaller cichlids like Firemouths, Rainbows, Spillirum, or Chromides?

If you don't want cichlids then maybe try Giant Danios, RedTailed Shark, Rainbow Shark, or silver Dollar?

You could always have a pair of convicts. I wouldn't get a male and female though unless you want babies.

the lfs has some paradise fish in with there tiger barbs and they seem to hold their own fine and are pretty, blue fish

Clown loaches get 12 inches. So I dont think so.

Silver dollars like to school and need more than a 45.

Personaly I dont like to mix fish form different continents. Id make the tiger barb school larger and ad energetic fish like zebra danios and for the bottom a group of yo-yo's.

oscars, aligator gars, alot of fish will eat tiger barbs.. Oh im sorry you mean you actualy want a bunch of jerk fishes? well then your on your own:D
