Hey, still working on starting my tank, but looking into live foods. First, do you prefer live food or flake? Second, what is your favorite live food? Third, how easy are they to raise, and how easy is it to keep them. And fourth how often so you feed? I know, a lot of questions but I'm really just starting to really get into the hobby and doing things right. Also, will neons eat live food?

Most live food is too big for neons. Maybe baby brine shrimp but that is actually not the healthiest thing to give them. They would actually prefer ground up flake food. I like the Omega one foods for the fish.

I am using the freeze dried baby brine as a treat for my little fishies .... this is not good for them you say?

It is not the most nutritional for them. I use it only as a treat for my fish like giving them a piece of candy. It should not be used as a main stable in their diet. A good flake food such as Omega One flakes and some frozen food such as mysis shrimp and/or plankton are better choices and the variety will really make the colors in your fish stand out.

I feed my fish flake and mosquito larvae. I farm the mosquito larvae for my fish, so i got plenty of it. Mosquito larvae is free to! Just make sure to harvest them everyday so they wouldn't become mosquito's and if there is to much mosquito larvae you can freeze them for winter use.

I went to PetSmart yesterday and looked at getting either Mysis Shrimp or Plankton as Marinemom suggested. They looked a bit big for small fish. Can the small fishies (see my 29g in signature) eat these?

I have a few neons, black neons and rummynose with my discus and in addition to flake food feedings, they all love the frozen bloodworms that I feed the discus. They will hold on to a worm that is too big until they make themselves swallow it. My neons are large and brilliantly colored and I think the frozen bloodworms definitely are great for them!

a variety in food is always the key. If your feeding live brine shrimp, use them within the first two days of them hatching, or gut load them with green water or spirulina about 30 minutes before feeding to the fish. If you want to culture and grow your own food, try daphnia and do the gut loading thing too.

how big are bloodworms? couldn't see through the dark colored cubes. lol

curious if they are smaller in size the the mysis or plankton. if the baby brine are not nutritious then i would like to switch to something better for them.

If plankton of mysis shrimp is to big for your fish you can try daphnia. It is a lot smaller and has a lot more nutrition then brine shrimp.
