What is the safest option for my tank?

My fear with the pleco is several years ago I got a beautiful little pleco for my goldfish tank. The tank was so full of algae I figured he would be fine in there and he was for a few weeks. Went on vacation for a weekend and came home to find him dead. I was so unhappy I took him (dead) to the fish store to try finding out what happened and they said he was under fed. I couldnt believe it with all the algae! Im thinking he was so small (Im talking teenie tiny) he didnt have his feeding skills down yet but honestly I dont know. My kids tend to grow very attached to plecos. They are so funky looking they just love them. My albino pleco in with my betta does great but hes the only one Ive been brave enough to get so far. I watch him like a hawk to make sure hes pooping so I know hes eating. Gross I know lol. I had mentioned to my husband last night about a cory and apparently hes on his way home with one now. The fish store guy told him to start with one and see how it does in a week. If its ok add in one more a week until we have 4. Not sure if thats the way I would have done it but ok. Now my question is this. To be a group they have to be the exact same species of cory yes? I doubt my husband asked its type so unless its albino Im going to have no idea. If I post a pic can someone tell me so I can make certain to get more of the same kind or will a mixed group work? I say this because I have 2 zebra and 1 pearl danio. The pearl seems quite bored being the only pearl but I cant for the life of me find another. She does group up with the zebras sometimes but more often than not she is alone. I have a few local fish stores keeping eyes out for another for me. Hopefully soon. Im excited to meet my new cory though!

Well,on the pleco topic, was yours a bristlenose(ancistrus sp.),or a regular pleco(hypostomus sp.)?A good idea for all plecos is to feed them raw zucchini as they sometimes do not compete for food and require more than the algae in the tank. Two,keeping one cory is a bad idea as they are one of the most gregarious fish that we keep. They will usually pine away without others of their own kind.If your tank isn't well cycled or you are concerned about adding too many then just add three to start off with.I suggest keeping one species as the majority of the time they will not actively school with different kinds.Good luck...

My tank is fully cycled so that shouldnt be an issue. Now the question is what kind is he so I can get more!? Hes brown with larger black spots. Ill try to get a pic in a bit.

I agree plecos need more to eat than just algae. They also do better with driftwood to rasp on.

As far as getting one cory at first it's not a terribly bad idea, IMO. Just to see if you like it or if it does well. It may hide being the only one but it's not going to wither away within the week unless there is something wrong with it or your tank. They do prefer their own species and identifying them isn't that hard so no worries there. You should be able to add the next 3 all at once though.

Just want to add, I only have 2 cories in my tank. One is over a year old and was in my mom's crappy goldfish tank with a UGF and no WC pretty much ever. I got him home and he's done well ever since. Bought him some friends that my keyholes kind of ripped apart little by little. So I am left with the original cory and one friend and they do well in my 20g. They aren't shy at all. They are peppered cories. I just wanted to let you know so you don't worry about your little solo guy too much. I do still urge you to get him some friends when possible.

Does he have a mask or stripes? If it's just a lot of larger spots it's probably a Peppered. They are a good choice for cories. Pretty active little guys.

Ok thanks. Ill give him a few days and see how he does. Here are a few pics. Not the best quality thats for sure. I can take better ones later on. My husband said he is "common" which tells me nothing. He does have stripes and spots.

He looks more brown than the peppereds I have. Mine are more gray. I'm not sure if cories can mix breed but he sort of looks like a mix between a bronze and a peppered. I'm sure someone else will come around and either confirm or deny.

Yes hes definitely brownish. I thought spotted cory cats were white no? Im horrible at figuring out what fish are! I have 6 fry that are 2 1/2 weeks old and I have no clue what they are yet lol.

it is called the peppered as well.Yeah,I agree Taysius.I had a school of seven peppered's that lived six to ten years respectively. When it got down to two,I let them live without adding more peppered's as they were happy. After one died, the solo one lived about another six months happy and energetic, though he never hung out with the school of sterbai or masked corys I added.Didn't mean to raise alarm, just giving you good rule of thumb...Later...
