what is this?

Shouldn't be a female if it is a Peacock, females tend to stay around the gray silver coloration but i do believe i would have to agree with you it looks like a Stuartgranti..

this is an Auloncara stuartgranti. Yours may be a female or just timid? Or depending on size, may not even be its real color???? this is the closest thing that I could come up with. Hope it helps!

that looks just like him but he is a bit more yellow right now. but last night he was looking like that. he looks different when i have different lights on too. i don't think he's a juvie cause he's about four inches long. i just learned that changing his ph will make him colour up more. is this actually true? if so, how do i go about doing that in a way that it will be stable? i will be keeping him in the 30 for now at least with a probable upgrade within the next several months. thanks to the poster who answered that. he is by himself. there are a couple guppy fry still in the tank but i hear he'll finish them off for me. :evil_lol: i was never really interested in cichlids before but he is just soooo gorgeous. in fact, he is probably the prettiest fish i've ever owned.

Don't try to change the pH without checking first your tank's water pH and hardness. In general, Malawi cichlids will be fine in a pH of 7.5 to 8.5 and a GH (general hardness) of 200 to 400ppm.

okay. thanks. what about the 'cichlid salt'? should i be buying this for him?

If your levels are within the range of what efors said you will be fine and no salts are needed unless you find it necessary to do so, its a matter of opinion and it wont hurt just follow instructions on how much you need to add, now as for me i have been an avid African cichlid keeper of Mbuna and Tanganyika for many moons and i don't add that stuff..

okay, thanks. (: he is a lot more colourful today. i think he just needed a cave, so i took some rocks from other tanks and built him a small one. it's not the best but he's enjoying swimming through and around it.

Yeah a lot of hobbyist will say haps and peacocks do not need rocky habitats but as you have stated he is doing tons better with the formation of a rocky column now i wouldnt go over board with the rocks but in a sense i would think that all fish need some sort of retreat in the form of caves and plants.. have fun with this fish he is very beautiful..

Wow! Yes, he is very beautiful indeed. He looks lovely on that pic with no flash.

yeah, i hate seeing a tank with fish and nothing else. it just doesn't look right to me. he already had a few plants in there but he just tears them out and they float around. he is digging a hole inside and behind his cave...lol. than taking all the sand and piling it both on top and to the right. i think he is trying to make his cave bigger. he also keeps swimming up and down attacking his reflection. it's pretty funny.

thank you both.

i'm not that good with the camera...lol.
