I am gonna set-up a large tank soon (55-150g), and i was wondering what was your guys' favorite tank. Like a community tank, or an african cichlid tank, or a tank with new world cichlids. Is there a single species that has been particularly rewarding?
THanks for the input.

You are going to get so many opinions here it may end up making your situation worse. Instead of asking US what WE like, ask yourself what YOU want a tank to be. Not necessarily WHAT fish, but what KIND of fish. DO you want small or large fish. Lots of color, lots of movement. A more subdued tank. A fish that breeds a lot or easily. A species tank. A single specimen tank. A schooling type tank with large schools of fish.

ALso another thing to consider is exactly what you are able to keep in terms of what kind of water you have. If you want DIscus and you have extremely hard water with a high pH it will be more difficult to keep them as opposed to keeping cichlids or other species.

Well, for whatever this is worth, my next tank project will be a 120 gallon well-planted community tank full of small, peaceful, colorful fish. 25 lemon tetras, 25 neon tetras, 7 female and 2 male guppies, 13 otocinculus, and 19 pygmy Cory cats. The school sizes can change and I could add different types of fish in smaller schools. I could even add 2 dwarf gouramis into that mix really easily for a couple of larger (relatively to the rest of the fish) display-type fish. I like the 120 because it is only 4 feet long, so it would look packed with that many fish, plus, it has 2 feet of width, so I could really differentiate the fore, mid and backgrounds for plants and make a really cool aquascape, I think. It'll be a long time before I can even afford any of it, so I have lots of time to change my mind and mix it up.

I agree quite a bit with gsk, we will give you so many ideas that you will get dizzy. I really like cichlids, but the joys of aquascaping kept me away from them. My 45 gallon tank will be home to 10 harquin rasboras, 3 small cories, 2 german rams, 3 pearl gouramis, and 2 angels. The numbers may change. I like the semi-agressive colorful community tank.

Find a fish you really like, then see what they pair well with.

Having bred and raised Africans for so long I'm actually finding myself more and more attracted to peaceful community tanks. Mostly fish from SA, nothing too big maybe around 3" max. Nothing too zippy either. I find myself being able to watch a tank for longer periods if it doesn't have fish darting all over the place all the time.

Africans are great fish, don't get me wrong, but I'm growing tired of worrying about aggression all the time.

I'll back gsk's post. I almost never chime in on stocking or tank inhabitants/style posts as there are too many choices and they are highly personal. What do want to see/have/use as a challenge?

For tanks themselves, just the container itself, my personal favorites are the 29, the 50, the 75 and the 120. They are easy to work in and with and develop well into a variety of setup formats.

my personal favorite is my 55g african tank because they have a really good personality and they are always sittin near the top of the tank waitin for me to feed them and they are always out i dont have any that hide and i also like when they play tug of war with feeders
