Alright so I decided I would go with a betta for my 7 gal.I cant really tell the difference by looking at them in those stupid little cups(they enjoy it my rearend). Im very sketchy about buying one online so my question:

What are the species of Bettas that LFS (in this case Petco) offer or have?

Im not sure about your pet store but mine only has veiltail and crowntail bettas.

species? 90% of all bettas seen in stores are just breeds of Betta splendens. I think there are about 8-9 different recognized tail types of bettas. most of the cheap ones are veiltail, the most common type, but there are many types, like crowntails, double tails, halfmoons, ect., and they come in every color of the rainbow.

anyway, try to get fish from the most respected LFS in your area.

well i just moved here and i was looking for some local ones instead and its showed four but all of them were shut down, so petco is my last resort.

Sorry I meant veil tail, crowntail, etc. Still figuring it out.

It's possible to pick out a betta from the betta cups. That's how I got mine (at Petsmart actually) and he is healthy and blows me bubblenests all the time.

Unless you have a very specific color you want, I'd try to ignore color for the most part when choosing. Look for one that is swimming around, notices you when you put your hand near his cup, has nice fins, etc. He should be flaring his gills at the other bettas around him - if he doesn't seem to notice them it's not good. If he's blowing a bubblenest in his cup, that's generally a good sign as healthy happy bettas often build bubblenests.

Another good idea is to wait until they get a fresh shipment in - the bettas will not have been sitting in the store for ages, and you will have more choices.

Good luck!

To me, american type petstores LFS, Petco/smart. Just got regular half moon, and crown tails. And they dont have much of a nice color other then the common blue, or red.

Go to chinatown and look for a LFS there, they should have tons of bettas and alot cheaper. Bufferflys to ace tails ect.

chinatown?lol um maybe than i should just look into a online thing...just a bit sketchy

Well, i work at a american LFS.

They have better fish then petsmart ect like that.

But i always go to chinatown to buy my exotic fish like black/blue arowanas, sting rays, wolffish, at times...even illegal fish.

They have bigger balls to cary more of the high end fish that you pretty much cant find anywhere. Also its not the type of stores where a family would walk in asking for a fish they want to start a new tank with. Most of their fish ranges for 50 all the way to $2,000. They dont cary stuff like neon tetras or crap like that (No offense).
