i'll try to take a pic later but i have a cichlid i got it from walmart. its green with tiger looking stripes on it. it has grown alot in the past month since i got him. like almost an inch. i got a albino looking one the same day and it hasn't grown near as much. today i got a blue one, a brown one, and a yellow one. this is for my 90g tank. i got the brown one because the other fish were picking on him and ate some of his fins off. so i figured i'd rescue him. so i know these are cichlids but what else do i need to know. as in how big will they get. from what i have read i guess about 4" or so.

How do you know what the fishes needs are if you don't know what kind of fish you have, SA cichlids have different needs than african cichlids.

thanks for the links. well i identified them all but the big yellow green one. so far they ALL have the SAME needs. which is cool. now just to figure out what the green one is. the pic of the bumble bee one was similar but the stripes weren't quit right. my camera batt it low so no pic yet.

one question. did you know everything about fish when you started out. i doubt it. so i am on here to try and learn. i figure that since they all came out of the same tank at walmart they should all be the same. but of course it is walmart so probably. which is why i am on here so i can make sure they have a happy life. or you could flame me and i'll say screw it and hope that i'm doing things right. which would you rather see. there are too many crap post and such to try and search through. i've already tried that so i ask a question. i do alot of research on thing befor i start. but some info i came up short on. so far all the fish i have have the same needs. so i need to figure out what this last one is. so please don't be an ***. if you can't help go away it will make it easier for me to get my info. but if you can help i'm all ears (or eyes) i learn fast all i need is the correct info :hi:

Good luck to you. Most people on this forum are helpful and have knowledge. But some of these people who have this knowledge push too far and can be rude if you did'nt go about doing things the way that they think is best. They have the right to give an opinion and try to help with advise, but should not go about it by being rude just because u did'nt do your research first; even if that rude person is right or not.
Im still learning myself and some would not recommened the fish combo i have. I will sometimes start a thread asking a question about a fish or a sickness; And someone will randomly write back saying this fish does'nt belong with that fish, without answering my question in the first place. Some of these people have the best of intensions, just given friendly advise thinking i may or may not no better. And some of these people can be too critical.
Some of these critical people take it too personal about how u are takin care of fish. The best thing these people can do is give friendly advise. If the critical people think people are not following advise they think should be used, Then give up on them and help the next person. Being rude and too critical will not help anybody on this forum, only drive them away.
And for the most rude and critical peolple, get a life. Yes people should take the best care of fish the most knowledgeable way they can. And you should not intenstionaly put fish in a bad situation. But come on fish are not people, don't treat people like they commited a crime because they were not prepared or knowledgeable enough when they first started keeping fish.

All I will say is that it is important to do research BEFORE you buy fish to understand what type of fish you want, what other fish they are compatible with and what water conditions the fish you choose need to be comfortable. You really shouldn't just throw fish in and hope for the best.

Having said that, it is always a learning experience and sometimes you have to learn the hard way by having fish die or whatever. Happened to me recently. You will also find that sometimes the staff where you buy your fish don't know what they're talking about. It's best to do a lot of research yourself for that reason.

Anyway, good luck with everything.

well when i bought the fish they all looked pretty much the same as in size and body form. just diffrent colors. i was like cool gimmie some diff colors. well when this one perticular fish grew really fast and the others didn't i figured it was time to ask. he loves to suck up the sand and spit it out he does it all day long. even after he eats. thanks everyone for the support. i agree i should know more but i don't so now i need to learn what i can to make things good for the fish.
so when you go to the store and the tank says african cichlids how do you know if they are african or south african?

4.8, I'm sorry about the response, but I do think the nature of typed communications can come off different than actually intended. Please stick around and continue to ask questions.
And by way, I've done exactly what you did. Ended up with a mix of cichlids...no idea what they were, and many did not survive. I did end up taking the lone survivor back to the fish store and starting a different community tank...it happens or has happend to more here than are willing to admit, I'm sure.

No I did not know anything, but just using common sense will tell ya not to just aimlessly buy a bunch of fish and throw them in a tank because they have pretty colors. Back when I started keeping fish you actually had to work to do any type of research. Now it is a piece of cake, you can sit on your but and find all the info ya need. Ofcourse your to lazy to even do that, ya got to have other people do the work for ya, when all ya needed was google and some time.

Sorry if I came of rude but all I did was ask one simple question and provide a little info that had not been presented yet in this thread. You've got a long way to go, much more so in life than in fish keeping. Enjoy your fish, while they still are alive, but I'm sure walmart will be happy to sell ya more next month.
