what kind of fish is this?

unvy-

I can't ID your fish from those photos beyond the fact that they are cyprinids, but I should caution you to always check your game laws before collecting fish, and know what you have before you take it home. Believe it or not, many minnows are threatened or endangered; by taking them home you are not only violating the law but harming the wild populations. Also be aware that some waters of NY state are off-limits for collection of live baitfish due to the presence of an untreatable, often lethal fish-specific pathogen called VHS (viral hemorrhagic septicemia) that you DO NOT want in your tanks.

Collecting fish in the wild is a great hobby, but you have responsibilities and obligations which must be observed. For more info, including links to NY fishing regs, please check out http.forum.nanfa.org.

Yup looks like a minnow to me as well. Did you catch them or were they bought???

I think he caught them:

"i have some fish that i caught in buffalo creek"

I have some small shiners and minnows my daughters caught in a local creek. They are the most lively fish I've ever seen.

Definitely a Dace. Not sure what species is found in your area but a bit of research may solve your mystery. If you want a real treat chill those little guys down over the winter into at least the low 60's if you can. When they warm up in the spring if you post pics the people who say "they're just minnows with no value" will be begging you for them!

looks like a fathead
