What "sparked" you into keeping fish yourself?

I was a serial murderer of goldfish as an eight year old through to about age ten or.

I used to have three in a bowl...once a week I would put them into the kitchen sink, scrub out the bowl and put them back in...no filter.

Then I dug an outdoor pond in our back garden when I was about fifteen or so...about four feet in diameter...put about ten goldies and a couple of black moors in...this confirmed to me that the natural life span of such fish was about six months :(

I also used to keep a tank full of leeches - don't ask me why, I found them interesting.

surprisingly I was single throughout this period in my life.

I am now trying to repay my debt to fishy society.

I actually bought our tank for our son for Christmas. He loved his little tetra's that we had in a 10G in his room. He read them bedtime stories every night. I thought it was so cute and decided to upgrade his tank for him. Well it started something in me. He lost interest, I took over (feeling alittle guilty maybe I took over so he lost interest)! Anyway here I am now, fish crazy! Now I'm thinking about putting the 10G back in his room with his original tetras or other friends ha! or maybe my room would be better:laugh:.

Always loved aquariums lol since my hubby won me a goldfish at a fair that is what really sparked the interest unfortunately my goldfish got ich and didn't make it but I went from having a 5g to a 3g for bettas and then upgraded to a 36g. Finding this website was a godsend members here have helped me be a better fishkeeper. I just love the hobby.:dive:

Was facinated with turtles, had 3 of them outdoors, well they died 2 years bach(after having them for about 16-18 years). now back into the hobby after two years with fish instead.

When I was a young, elementary-school aged kid, we were reading a book about the ocean and its wonderous inhabitants. I was fascinated by (of all things) the horseshoe crab. I came home from school that day and excitedly told my Mom what I'd learned that day and she saw the tremendous excitement that ocean creatures gave me. I was obsessed with learning more and really noticed everything in my world that was related to fish and sea-life. One day, when I got home from school, my Mom (who was a housewife at the time) went to the trouble to set up a 20 gallon aquarium in our family room. It had some mollys and a blue crayfish in it. I was thrilled! It was the most awesome surprise I've ever received. I know now that she rushed the set up, but it worked and I'm very grateful for this sweet act of love. From that day on, I've been hooked. Thanks Mom!!

ive always been fascinated by fish and fish tanks,i was maybe 10 when i asked my parents for a 5 gallon tank for christmas, which i filled ( a few times ) with guppies, the odd neon here or there ,whatever was cheap and good looking.i didn not understand the differance that tetras like to school and african cichlids beat everything up i just wanted fish :) after about a year i saved up and bought myself a 30 which is still in my room. currently working on a 90 gallon and have a couple 10s as well.

I was given a 20 or something gallon for my birthday when I was little. I just fell in love with my first fish: 2 Bleeding heart tetras and 2 fancy guppies. I loved to watch them swim around. Then it sort of took off from there.:)

my dad had fish when we were little in his 35 hex, he had danios, zebra plecos, neons, etc, then when i was little i got a gold fish in a 10 gal. never changes the water, it didnt work out. just last year my friend got some fish, it was like a compition, i got my old 10 gal. out got a new fillter cycled it and over stocked (1 honey gourami, 1 red tailed black shark, pleco, 2 scisor tail rasboras, any ways, got a 20gal. long for my birth day and all the works spipon rocks, and this time talked to my dad he told me weekly water changes and clean the filter bags once every two weeks and change them every month, now i have lots of fish in my 20gal. long. and just 1 month ago i inherited my dads 35 hex. and i had all his help on this one i decided to get firemouths because that is what he used to bread in there. as my friends tank goes down hill mine just seem to keep going up, i will never give fish keep up

I saw a beautiful betta at Petco (see avatar), bought him and put him in a large vase. Upgraded him to a 5.5g a couple of months later and gave him some snail friends.

Went on to upgrade to a 12g with another betta, some platies, & cories.
Went on to upgrade to a 46g with the fish in sig.

I currently have 3 male bettas and 1 female betta, as they remain my all-time favorite fish. :)

From an early age I had a habit of rescuing animals of all shapes and sizes, so had many tanks and cages in the garage to keep them in until they were ok to release again (I had very understanding parents and also lived on acreage). When one day a friend of mine decided that she didn't want her fish any more and was going to flush them down the toilet. So true to nature I took them off her hands and set up a tank for them until I could find them a good home (so I thought) after watching them for a while and getting to know their personalities I couldn't get rid of them. Now I have 4 tanks and a large pond, as well as the rest of my menagerie (dogs 3, cat 1, bird 1 and 3 lizards (injured soon to be released again).

OH and currently trying to convince my husband that I need a large custom built tank as a feature in the lounge room. Any ideas on arguments I could use to convince him would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers
