Ok... So if any of you read my last post, you know I have set up a 70 gal SW in the last couple of weeks... Its currently cycling.. But my GF and I have been going to the LPS looking at what types of fish etc I might put in the tank..

Well... Now she wants fake plants.. Are these a good idea in a SW tank... I have more than enough Live Rock in the tank, but she thinks it should look more "pretty"... I'm all about natural..

Comments? Help? Good Logical Arguments to dissuade her?

The one and only arguement you need is the display tank full of corals, it looks far nicer than any fake plant ever will!!!

make sure there safe in saltwater tanks, put them in the tank, stand back, and im sure you will take them out in due time.... They just dont look natural...

I agree completely.. But her argument is that there has to be "plants" in the ocean to make oxygen.. I told her its called algae.. I also said that fake plants won't make oxygen why do you think you can't put the plants they sell in the LPS into a saltwater tank.. She won't budge.. Its not natural, I don't want it.. She is impatient.

I just don't think I am going to win this one.. occasionally I can when it comes to my hobbies.. But since this one is in the "house" and on display... :wall:

Make a selection of 'plants' that are acceptable to you that also, by meer coincidence, happen to be expensive. Then make her pay for them.

or

Get fake corals.

or

Just say No!! :)

Good Luck. Once they are in there maybe she'll agree with you that they look rediculous.

I read somewhere about how fake ornaments are not compatible with Saltwater. The salt begins to break the plastics and paint down after time and contaminates the tank. Might just want to bring that up with her.

This is one point which is very valid indeed. A good example of this, is the marine shop near me..They have two seperate decoration areas, one for marine and one for FW. Each and every marine decoration is clearly marked as marine safe.

Its certainly something that has to be kept in mind...Never buy anything to go in your tank unless you can confirm that it is actually Marine Safe...

Get macroalgae. There are some that do not grow too aggresively and some that most fish will not pick on. I have some red macroalgea (Dr. F&S calls it red kelp, but I am not too sure) in my display tank. I like it and it adds color.

Below is a list of all of the marine plant vendors taken from this (Reef Central) thread. Where to get macroalgae and marine vascular plants. The links are listed in the order in which they appeared in that thread. Please refer to that thread for discussion and some vendor experiences.
