What the GF wants

I think you should just level with her, tell her the information behind corals and plants in a tank, discuss the possibility of later contamination and the fact that they don't look real good in tanks, and you'll probably be constantly fussing with them to get them to stay put, etc.

She should want to do whatever is best in the longrun of the fish - and if it's a certain look she wants, can you see if you can find something that might look more like a seaweed plant?

Anyway, girlfriend or not, the health of the fish come first, IMO. Who's tank is it, anyway? Who's spending the money on it?

Can you compromise, say, if you pick the decor, she picks most of the fish? etc.

Tell her that the fake plants are for tropical tanks only and same as you can't put the tropical fish in a saltwater tank you can't use the tropical decorations in a saltwater reef tank. It won't take long for different algae to start growing everywhere and it looks so much more natural.
Oh and just a thought, if you did put any fake plants in they'll only get covered in coraline algae and start looking awful, bet she wont want them in there then lol.

Hahahahah. This has taken a turn for the worse. Poor girl. Feels like Salem, Mass. all over again.

You could always buy her a 10gallon and let her play with that for a bit. Maybe a betta, a couple goldfish. Maybe even a F8 puffer. Help her set her tank up and whatnot.

When lying, fighting and compormising doesn't work, I like to revert to distraction tactics. "You want to put plastic plants in my big SW tank? Hey...look at this pretty ten gallon with pretty fish and, OMG pretty plastic plants." Then get back to work on your tank.:headbang2:

Probably won't work, but you could always compromise to get real Marine plants. They actually don't look to shabby.

getting this back on to a serious note, take your partner round the various fish shops and show her comparisons of fake plants and some of the corals...then see if she then see things i a different light..
