I sent out a order of (20) adult german blue rams on the 7th. ( I added in 9 extras). They arrived at the unit on the 9th, but the address was marked as incorrect.

I printed the label straight through paypal. I did not realize that the address was different than the one aquabid gave me until the 90008 post office called me on the 9th.

I stated in the auction to make sure the paypal address was confirmed. I called the post office back and gave them the shipping information, as well as faxed it in. Nothing changed.

Long story short is that the buyer was not able to drive 30 min. to the post office to pick up the fish, so now they are on their way to back to me. ALL the fish are dead. ( $60 went down the drain.)

My question is how much of a refund should I offer him? I am out $60 in fish too. Shipping cost was almost $50. He paid $105 shipped priority mail.

I am so frustrated right now. I tried for 3 days to get the post office to reroute the package and/or the buyer to pick up the fish.

It's their own fault for not making sure that they sent payment with the correct shipping address. I've accidentally done it before, and having been in their shoes, can't honestly say I feel you owe them anything. There was no reason you would have to do extra work to ensure the fish got to the right place, and the onus is entirely on them to get the right address associated with the payment. I accidentally sent a box of fish to my old apartment once (completely different borough, and entirely out of the way) and not knowing anyone who lived in the building any more, had to hound the post office to hold the box for me till I could pick it up. How I see it, the wrong address issue was entirely their fault, as was their unwillingness to pick up the fish and rectify their own mistake. Not saying you should totally brush them off, but if they try to lay any of the blame for this at your feet, I'd show them just one of my fingers and tell em to get lost.

If it was just me, i would not refund the receiver. The guy should have just driven the 30 min to get the fish. Maybe subtract the price of the fish from the total and give him whats left? but only if you promised to refund him/her.

Did the buyer at any point ask you to send it to an address other than the one on his paypal account?

IMO, this doesn't matter. Any buyer needs to expect that a seller has a given system, and can't be running around checking emails and tracking down addresses for every order. You send payment, you send the address it needs to go to. There is nothing particularly hard or difficult about changing your address, whereas there is potentially a lot of pain in the ___ involved for the seller if you can't take the time to ensure the right addy is associated with payment, or cant own up to the responsibility created by having someone send fish to the wrong address.

I feel sorriest for the fish. They didn't have a choice in the matter.

what does the buyer want to do? have you asked them? me personally would refund the cost of the fish but not the shipping. reason being is that you have the fish (dead or not) but he messed up on the shipping address so as a good entrepreneur i would eat it and maybe save a future customer.

I wouldn't, but that's just me. ;)

Agree with Inka and the others. You shipped the package to the address provided by the buyer. It's a shame, but you don't owe them anything. There's no obligation for a refund on your part.

You also mentioned this was an auction sale, Courtney. If the transaction was made through AquaBid, they always want to be notified when a buyer or seller is switching addresses around. If that buyer's address doesn't match what AB has for them, they're violating AB's terms. Now if this was Ebay, I'm not sure if they care or not.

Real sorry to hear about the fish. It's always sad when something like this happens.
