What to do with starter fish?

^^^:grinyes: :grinyes: :grinyes: ^^^

Yup, deffinetly do research first.

Is it a goldy, or a small gray fish, maybe with stripes??

If its a goldy, prolly best to give him back, if its the small gray, its a schooling danio, active and cute, especially in a proper school. If its anything else, pics plz!

There is no such thing as a "starter fish".. There are only fish that people are to uneducated to respect. Most shops push Zebra Danios on newbies, for the simple fact that they're very hardy and can usually survive starting a cycle in your tank.

Well dont get mad at me. I did the right thing and asked you guys. They are alive and well swimming in my tank. Get mad at the guy in the fish store that called em starter fish.

i usually cycle my tank with a small specimen of a fish that i am interested in. 9 times out of 10 (or 3 out of 5 actually since I've only started 5 tanks) the "starter fish" survives the cycle and lives on to be a member of the community. if you don't want the fish in your tank, or worse, if being in the tank is not conducive to the survival of the fish take him back to the store or give him away to someone.

and why do the LFS call them starter fish....and as long as your fishies are doing fine. nothing wrong with just keeping them....we did and we still have one of our gouramis..the other one was too aggressive toward the smaller gourami..so gave him to our ma and pa lfs.and he is still living ...and some lfs's will even call them experimental fish:eek3:

I think the anger is directed towards the store and bad advice to newbies in general (trust me, I received REALLY bad advice). Good on you for asking and being willing to accept the advice of the folks here. I wish I had done that sooner! You did the right thing!

I like danios... active, some look cool

they were my "starter" fish back in the day... I did'nt ask the LFS though... I just bought a book and they said they were good starters.

My brother started with giant danios

Danios FTW
