As i'm sure most of you know, a majority of fish stores these days require that you bring in the fish body for a full refund to occur.

and, as i'm sure all of you have had at least one fish die; and dont have bottomless pocketts; this should be an issue of concern to all.

my question is simply, what would you do in order to preserve the bodies in order to allow a full refund?

freezing?
packing with salt?
vaccum sealing?

any thoughts on this?

I would just freeze it if you are going to be a few days before going to your lfs.

the one time i've done this, i threw the body in a freezer..

I've put them in ziploc bags in the fridge for a few days until I can get to the store.

Is it really worth the hastle to preserve the fish, drive to the LFS, haggle over a return, get a new fish, and drive home. With gas being $2+ a gallon it would have to be a pretty expensive fish for me to waste my time. Anything under $30 or so I wouldn't even bother, and the fish that usually cost over $30 are the ones that come with no guarantee to begin with.

To answer your question I would just toss the body in a zip lock and freeze it.

I'd go with refrigeration myself, in a ziploc bag. It works well enough for the morgue, it's good enough for me.

As to gas prices, you have a point there - but at 75-79 average MPG, I really don't worry about that...

Then again, how may of us have spent $20 on meds to save a $2 fish? We all do odd things from time to time, don't we?

:OT: wow what magic car do you dirve?? the most gas milage i have seen a car get is 49- the toyota prius

ok to answer your question- as soon as a fish dies i bring it back to the store i got it from if it dies within the guatantee. oterwise, i just flush it. if you didnt have time at the moment it died, i suppose you could put the body in the freezer

:OT: I do all my errands on my motorcycle, unless it involves carrying stuff that's too big or bulky to be strapped on. And even that is pretty open to interpretation LOL :OT:

I always wondered about that, the freezing and all... um, well, probably best not to go into detail and get all graphic - it's a family board after all.

I guess either way would work.

I've got one on ice now. :) It's a $2 silver tip tetra. I had bought six of them and this one died while in quarantine. I put it on ice because if the rest started dropping off I was going to take them back. However, if no more died I would just cut my losses. After a week in quarantine, I put the remaining fish in my 55. Well, one started acting funny late at night, by the time I got up the next morning, it was gone. The "bring the body back" guarantee doesn't work when a 2" tetra dies in a tank with two 5" pictus cats!!! :duh:
