What Works for Me May Not Work for You

I wonder if Pops is going to send us all a bill for his therapeutic treatment thread?

awesome thread, now that I have come out of the closet so to speak I may be around more I confessed and no one flamed me!...

Well we want to see more of you surfkat! I hope to see your name up there in lights (so to speak) :D

I can honestly say that no regular user here wants to "flame" anyone for their practices. That said, I do believe that the community has an interest in promoting best practices of care. Just check out the "Stickies" here to see a demonstration of the site making best practices available to the general public.

There is indeed much grey-area in the art of keeping our tanks and specimens healthy; it need not be an algorithmic excercise. However (and contrary to the belief of some), there is such thing as plainly incorrect care. For example, placing specimens in an uncycled tank is suboptimal. Anyone who wants to dispute this is going to find plenty of users who will respectfully disagree. Certain specimens have proven time and time again that they need certain tank conditions, water parameters, etc. to be healthy. Arguing to the contrary tends to be an uphill battle.

Not a single individual at this site is an "expert"... most of us are here to learn each day. If a user elects to post information about their practices, IMO they are electing to receive open, constructive feedback. If they subsequently decide that they will ignore all evidence to the contrary and persist with their own methods, it is their decision and their business. Just don't expect me to validate such practices as unilaterally "OK"; the community may point out that such practices put the fish, invert. etc. at needless risk.

In short, we all can (and do) exchange constructive criticism. This is how we learn and grow within the hobby. Our tank buddies thank us for it :)

well... i have been fallowing this thred long enough that i think it only fair i say a few things
-i use fish for cycling (hearty fish only and do wc's so often it takes forever to establish because the water is so clean)
-do 50%+ wc a few times a week ...or even a few times a day if i feel it needs it
-i over feed but make up for it by not feeding a day or two or do more wc's :headshake2:
-i buy ghost shrimp to eat as much algie as they can befor they get eaten
-i have kept permanant healthy fish in QT (my candystripe pleco)
-i have kept a firemouth in my goldfish tank w/ no aggression at all
-i keep a crawfish in the tank w/ my jack knowing full well one of these days i will find the empty shell of a crawfish and a happy(& full) jack
...and the list goes on

Always cycle fish-in- never lost a fish doing it
Make new filter pads out of quilt batting
Love a UGF
Never bought a NEW tank that was over 3 gallons in size
Never Qt'd anything
I used to manage a walmart pet department (gasp!)
Gravel sweep when I feel like it
Water changes by sense of smell
I test when I'm feeling obsessive
I haul buckets
Aquarium salt makes the fish taste good

-One time I went to Walmart with the intention of scolding the manager for keeping fish in horrible conditions and ended up returning home with a Betta instead.
Thanks guys.

I went to walley for bag balm for the dogs' pads and came home with jaws the betta who now lives in a 5 hex on the kitchen counter (looks like a clown car full of clowns threw up in it decor wise)

after all he IS white and red :lipssealedsmilie:

and, I totally lied to the bf..he said no more fish but I told him that Jaws was adopted from someone who didnt want him anymore. the bf being a sucker like me for unwanted animals (thats how we got 3 horses instead of the 2 he thought he was getting) caved. thats how the clown puke 5 came home it was a b day gift for me and jaws LOL

I Haven't been doing this long but now I feel a little better about my tank maintenance. Here are Mine:
1. I never test the water unless it really tastes funny when I siphon it.
2. I have learned that nothing takes the taste of fish tank away.
3. out of the last 15 neon tetras i have bought only one has survived, the others have died within an hour of being in the tank.
4. I leave my dead neons stuck to the filter intake because Mr. Betta likes them as snacks.
5. I have way to many snails in my tank.
6. sometimes the light is on, sometimes not. I don't keep any schedule.
7. when i have to move the betta, i catch him by hand because i feel the net is too stressful.

I thought of one more thing I do, here at the restaurant i allow the little kids who come in to touch the glass all they want just wont let them start smacking it

They just love the fishies and how can you squash such joy when you see it shine from their faces and oh the reaction the parents get when their kids are allowed by the owner of the tank to touch the glass when they try their best to stop them. I mean hey as is fly to fly paper so is toddler to fish tank
