What Works for Me May Not Work for You

This is such a cleansing, yet informative thread! Thanks Pops for starting it! :headbang2:

HAHA I keep this forum open all day at work TOO!

and I never wash my hands before sticking them in the tank. Often I've had a glass of wine (or two) and decide to do "grooming" of the fish and dogs. No problems yet though!

1. I quarantined twice. Lost 22 cyps and 6 multies. Heaters malfunction both times.
2. I don't believe in heaters on my tanks, just wanted those fish to be less stressed.
3. I don't clean my canisters unless there is so much algae my pleco cannot keep up.
4. I keep multies and elipsifers together without a single loss, unless you count fry and I don't.
5. I can't breed my triple red caucs or german blues unless I neglect them with partials once a month.
6. I do 20% twice a week on my tang cichlid tanks, they grow faster than anyone I've seen reporting.
7. I do 10% WC on my reef tank once a week if I remember...with tap water.
8. I lug 5 gallon buckets and not because I think it's zen, but because I'm cheap and this hobby costs way too much as it is.

- Big believer in quarantine (had a sick angel who didn't make it, then 3 clown loaches showed ich after getting them, all well now)
- About 25% water change weekly
- A bit overstocked (though all fish are still small. Getting a 125 - 150g before the clowns get big)
- Test at least once a week (mainly ammonia and nitrates)

You are welcome:thm:

I guess it is the Rebel in me. lol!

I love when someone tells me something cannot be done(within reason.) This Hobby for me has kept me out of trouble and a welcome relief ,( escape) from the day to day grind.

I figured that I was not alone in my thinking , When I find something that works I usually stick to it or modify it to fit me.

The responses have been very enlightening and therapeutic.

Keep up the Good work and keep me smiling!!!:):):):)

Wow! This thread makes me feel a lot better!

-My 5 gallon hex is, and always has been, overstocked. I haven't had any problems with ammonia or anything else since the tank finished cycling. Until the day before yesterday, that is, when I had a fish die (was the first death since the tank finished cycling).
-I tend to overstock my tanks.
-I test my water before I do a water change, or if something happens. I almost always only test ammonia.
-I try to do a 25-30% water change every week in all my tanks. I don't always succeed.
-All of my tanks (with the exception of my 5 hex) have more filtration than they need.
-I keep fish with my turtles. I have about 50 guppies, ranging in age from newborn fry to four months old and one adult, in with my 2" yellow bellied slider. I have a 5" comet goldfish that refused to be eaten in with my two adult African sideneck turtles.
-I have live plants in all of my tanks.
-There have been times when I didn't wash my gravel very much, if at all.
-I recently fell in love with using sand.
-I have never quarantined a fish, though I plan to if I ever get around to using my 29 gallon for fish.
-There are seven tanks in my bedroom (my 5 hex, a ten gallon, a 55 gallon turtle tank, a 20 gallon turtle tank, an empty, soon-to-be-betta-tank, an empty 1.5 gallon tank that was once used for raising fry, and an empty, leaky 29 gallon tank).
-I've had more success with my guppy fry since I stopped trying to move them to their own tank.
-When I do a water change, I rinse my filter in the used water. If it's really dirty, I rinse it under hot tap water.
-I fast my fish once a week, with the exception of my guppies (that's just because of the fry).
-There is a Python in the garage that my mom said I could have. I still don't use it, preferring instead to use buckets (which sometimes involves taking buckets of water upstairs).

-And apparently, I have lots of confessions to make, and I'm long-winded.

Forgot one. I'm closing on my house in two weeks. I had my realtor take me to the house yet again to take measurements and review water sources and electrical outlet placements for plumbing to the basement.

- I only use sponge filters in my betta tanks (some of which are only 2.5 gallons)

- I overstock in all my tanks, but not by a lot (honestly!)
- I never gravel vac my larger planted tanks or shrimp tanks, just hover over the substrate.
- I like sand substrate
- I don't mind ramshorn/pond/mts snails anymore and actually like them!
- I have never qt'ed any of my fish and have never had a problem because of it.
- I don't test my water's parameters anymore, not even during a cycle for a new setup, but will test parameters if there is an obvious problem in one of my tanks.
- I don't like pythons for water changes
- I didn't properly level my larger tanks before filling them or use shims under their stands when I first set them up (!) but I definitely plan on making sure they're level at my new house before setting them up again.
