What Works for Me May Not Work for You

Agreed. When you wash your media in tap water it does not wash off the BB it kills it. Then in turn it creates ammonia in your tank from the dead and decaying bacteria :)
Not necessarily. I too rinse ALL media in my tap water, which comes from a well, not to mention when doing water changes water goes straight from the tap to the tank. I do this with the 9 tanks I have and have no issues with water quality. I however would not suggest this if you are on any type of water that may contain chlorine or chlorimine (sp?)

I sometimes rinse mine with tap water. My tap water does have chlorine. But, all of my fish tanks have bio-wheel filters. I've never had an ammonia spike after doing this. I figure with the bacteria on the bio-wheel and in the gravel, I'm good. And so far I have been.

And, this thread has been so educational. I'm really enjoying it.

I do exactly the same. Nobody ever told me I had to rinse my cartridges in specific kinds of water. I always figured that the colony are living on my biowheels, and it's not like I rinse those LOL

I actually like the look of some algae in a tank
Understock and over filter - that's my motto
I too LOVE doing PWC's with buckets.

I talk to my fish when i feed and watch them eat, seems to cut down on their stress level when i have to fiddle with the tanks....

ok, why are alot of people anti-carbon?

Urine, human waste, has large ammounts of ammonia in it. Works pretty fast for me, and beats buying pure ammonia, who would pay out for that when your body naturally produces it. Thats all i mean.

urine is sterile...ex mother in law used to use it for her childrens ear-aches/infections (the childs own urine of course)

while i'm here, again...

--I only use my python for filling and use buckets for syphoning..a 75 foot python just doesnt generate enough suction..and i put the old water down the toilet instead of the tub (drains too slow)

--I split up the light time during the day 5 hrs in the morning and 4 during the evening ..had a brown algae problem..bluck!! (works somewhat) and i cut down on the ferts..

--I dont test often either..

--I over feed.. :wall: (but do weekly water changes and my fish get big fast!!)

--I have/buy way too much aquarium "stuff"..house looks like a tornado hit it the last couple of months since i've revived my aquarium interest..

--and ...last but not least.....................I covet Richs' angel fish.. :uhoh:

weekly water changes normally turn into monthly changes

always rinse out media in hot water ..have replaced media 4 times in 3 years..lol

don't clean filter till outlet flow stops.

My son has been known to feed oreo cookies to my 55gallon occupants..bala sharks LOVE EM!!

Albino catfish died form massive oreo exposure..I blame it on them bieng the cheap knockoff brand and not actually oreo's

have been known to autopsy dead fish.

I love this! True dedication indeed!:eek3:

We give away fish that we could make money on, Pops is to good to our Customers ,I use Pops account because I am to lazy to create my own:) I am also a Nurse/Tank Cleaner, I read this thread with my coworkers during break. I love Watching our fish spawn and raising their fry. I use the fish room as an escape from our Grandchildren, I let Pops deal with them he is just like them!!!!! (Kid at Heart)

I hate to see some of our fish go, I work very hard keeping all the tanks spotless . Pops will not allow me to cross our strains but I switch males and females around and get caught 90% of the time. I let Pops think he is in charge.

We need more confessions so I do not get board at work during break.

Wait until he reads this LOL!!
